Twenty-Three: I was created to serve the king. I’m supposed to be a vegetarian virgin spending all my life reading motivational scrolls and working out. The others think of me as the troublemaker because I was the first one to sneak women into our room. When the king dies and it comes time to flee for our lives, I convince them to run. What happens next is nothing we could ever have expected: a new world, a place where the sun shines and there are people without magic.

And then I meet her, my Isolde.

Isolde thinks I’m just a mage named Alaric. She thinks I'm from this world. I see the magical bond growing between us, but I can't tell her who I am. Not yet.

Isolde: I live in a house haunted by the ghost of my grandmother. If that isn't weird enough, I just killed a serial killer there. Talk about bringing bad vibes to a place. That's my cue to move.

Even though the serial killer is dead, I feel like I'm being followed. My car breaks down on a remote rural road and my stalker is right behind me. That's when I meet Alaric. That's when my world changes. I'm no longer the person I was and I can't go back. He's my only lifeline while I adjust to the knowledge that there's more magic in the world than I ever knew.

I know he has secrets. I wish he could trust me. No one has ever made me feel the way he does. The problem is, it’s hard to fall in love with someone who won't tell you who they are.
