Few of us meet our dogs at Day One. The dog who will eventually become an integral part of our family, our constant companion, and our best friend is born without us into a family of her own. A puppy's critical early development into the dog we come to know is usually missed entirely. Dog researcher Alexandra Horowitz aimed to change that with her family's new pup, Quiddity (Quid). In this scientific memoir she charts Quid's growth from wee grub to boisterous sprite, from her birth to her first birthday.

In Our Dogs, Ourselves, Alexandra Horowitz explores all aspects of this unique and complex relationship that “dog lovers will savor and absorb” (Shelf Awareness). As Horowitz considers the current culture of dogdom, she reveals the odd, surprising, and contradictory ways we live with dogs.

Every dog lover knows the feeling. The nuzzle of a dog’s nose, the warmth of them lying at our feet, even their whining when they want to get up on the bed. It really seems like our dogs love us, too. But for years, scientists have resisted that conclusion, warning against anthropomorphizing our pets. Enter Clive Wynne, a pioneering canine behaviorist whose research is helping to usher in a new era: one in which love, not intelligence or submissiveness, is at the heart of the human-canine relationship.

Tucked away in Siberia, there are furry, four-legged creatures with wagging tails and floppy ears that are as docile and friendly as any lapdog. But, despite appearances, these are not dogs - they are foxes. They are the result of the most astonishing experiment in breeding ever undertaken - imagine speeding up thousands of years of evolution into a few decades. In 1959, biologists Dmitri Belyaev and Lyudmila Trut set out to do just that, by starting with a few dozen silver foxes from fox farms in the USSR and attempting to recreate the evolution of wolves into dogs in real time.

The Underdogs tells the story of Karen Shirk, felled at age 24 by a neuromuscular disease and facing life as a ventilator-dependent, immobile patient, who was turned down by every service dog agency in the country because she was "too disabled". Her nurse encouraged her to tone down the suicidal thoughts, find a puppy, and raise her own service dog. Karen did this, and Ben, a German shepherd, dragged her back into life.

Is it really human nature to stab one another in the back in our climb up the corporate ladder? Competitive, selfish behavior is often explained away as instinctive, thanks to evolution and "survival of the fittest", but in fact, humans are equally hard-wired for empathy. Using research from the fields of anthropology, psychology, animal behavior, and neuroscience, Frans de Waal brilliantly argues that humans are group animals.

More than 15 years ago, Tamar Geller began her career as a dog trainer by observing a scientific study of wolves in the wild. She realized that the socialization and parenting techniques they used to raise their cubs were rooted in bonding, communication, and play: not in aggression, dominance, or punishment. If people used these techniques when training their dogs, she realized, there would be no need for prong collars, choke chains, or any kind of physical or verbal aggression.

More than 90 percent of dog owners consider their pets to be members of their family. But often, despite our best intentions, we are letting our dogs down by not giving them the guidance and direction they need. Unwanted behavior is the number-one reason dogs are relinquished to shelters and rescue groups. The key to training dogs effectively is first to understand why our dogs do what they do. And no one can address this more authoritatively than the diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists.

In Your Dog Is Your Mirror, dog trainer Kevin Behan proposes a radical new model for understanding canine behavior: a dog’s behavior and emotion, indeed its very cognition, are driven by our emotion. The dog doesn’t respond to its owner based on what the owner thinks, says, or does; it responds to what the owner feels. And in this way, dogs can actually put people back in touch with their own emotions.

I definitely enjoyed this book.
This book was definitely educational and I learn things I didn't know about. I really enjoyed listening to this every single time I got up and out of the shower. I even listen to it while with my dogs. I enjoyed every part of this book. Some parts even made me tear up but that's because I'm a very sensitive person to anything about dogs. I think this is a great book for anyone wanting to learn about dogs more. I highly recommend this book I really enjoyed it.

Great info for the average dog owner
As a trainer/behaviorist myself, I love learning from other professionals and look forward to their lessons. This book is a great wealth of information that pet owners and their dogs would find greatly helpful.
I have two observations. I don’t know Ms. Horowitz or her history with dogs aside from what she mentioned in this book. But it seems to me that a lot of her studies were of dogs at the dog park. I believe that if she studied street dogs/packs, she may have different views on a couple of topics. My other observation and disappointment is in one of her last chapters called “Get a Mutt”. While her love for rescues is obvious and dear, her opinions about mutts vs purebreds are very askew and unfortunately biased. There is no study that proves that mutts are “healthier” or “less manic” than purebreds. Dogs being bred by reputable, ethical breeders, are predictable in behavior and quite healthy being that good breeders do in depth health testing on their breeding stock. I see mixed breeds on a daily basis who aren’t getting what they need to live a fulfilled life because the owners aren’t catering to the breeds that make up that specific dog. I have owner both rescues and purebreds and there are pros and cons to both. But both need to be done responsibly. So, unfortunately she is pushing HER biased opinion in regards to rescuing - which is unfortunate considering the rest of her book is pretty science based.
It is a great book regardless and a must read for any pet owner.

I grew bored
This is very thorough, well researched book. If you have an insatiable tolerance for material on dogs, you'll love it. The narration is fine. Alas, my problem with this book was me--it was simply way more information on dogs than I had an interest in.

Sounded too robotic
I bought this audible book based on my research and the reviews. I was so disappointed. I thought there would be a nice story and introduction of understanding our dogs. Instead, the voice over sounded like a robot, it felt as if she jumped right into the book and I must have missed a chapter, because of the way she talked and delivered the text. It was as if she was talking "at" us and not "with/to" us.

Good story but monotone reader
The story was well written and the information provided was very interesting. However, the reader was a little too monotone and mellow in the reading making it difficult to stay focused on the book at times.
