Left longing for more about the government

I wanted more info on the government secrets. Is it still in use? Just how much $$ did taxpayers spend on a facility to save only government employees.

Relatable in many ways

The title got my attention due to my familiarity with the Greenbrier and West Virginia. The story kept me interested because each chapter peeled back the layers. I shared it with our Jewish sisterhood book club and my friends who are not Jewish but are familiar with the bunker at the Greenbrier. Everyone loved it! I enjoyed listening to the audio book on Audible especially the voices of Sol and Sylvia due to their accents and pronunciation of Yiddish words. I agree with the author that families have their secrets and it can take generations to discover them. Great book and even better listen!

Genuine depiction of characters

I have enjoyed the superb narration by Gili Messer who once again, has brought to life the protagonists, their traits including language & dialects . The story of Jews in Appalachia is unique. It sheds light on an era bygone.

Terrific read

The characters are captivating, the history is so clearly drawn and placed at the foundation of the story. The author’s facility with language made this great - precise and careful. Once I got started I didn’t want to stop. (The narrator overdid it with accents, but I think that about most audio books.)

A little slow but good story

It was a good story but a little slow at times. Overall not bad and an interesting read to learn about history.

Too Difficult to Follow

This book jumped around quite a bit. I’m one that I love to follow an interesting story story, but it felt choppy throughout the abrupt ending Didn’t matters.

4 Timelines and Multiple POVs

The book held my attention all the way through so for that alone, I liked it. Audio narrator was excellent. As for the rest... I probably would have liked it better with fewer timelines and POVs, but definitely was an interesting story.

Live in WV-love the history

Good storyline, great characters that kept your interest. Love the history portraying WV as people and not just country “hill” folk.

I remember when the story about the hidden bunker broke in 1992

I loved this story with one caveat; Toggling back and forth between three characters and time periods was difficult to follow. I wish we didn’t have that trend and could just follow a story chronologically from start to finish.

Excellent Historical Fiction - A Sure Book Club Choice

A sweeping saga of 3 generations - I really enjoyed the historical fiction foundation of what actually happened at the greenbrier during ww2 - it is actually something that can be visited on tour today !

What is it ? Read the book !! The rich blending of American / Jewish history and world events will be of interest to every reader - very good character development and pace of the storylines
