Inizialmente disorientato, Graham Gore si trova a vivere con il suo "ponte" - una donna single abituata a cavarsela da sola -, e a confrontarsi con oggetti e concetti misteriosi quali "lavatrice", "Spotify" e il "crollo dell'Impero Britannico". Tuttavia, Gore è ricettivo e si adatta rapidamente, e, nel corso di una lunga e afosa estate, lui e la donna passano dall'imbarazzo all'amicizia a un'appassionata relazione sentimentale.
