Il carcere, pubblicato nel 1948 con La casa in collina sotto il titolo comune Prima che il gallo canti, è una storia di privata solitudine. Pavese racconta in terza persona l'esperienza autobiografica della condanna al soggiorno obbligato a Brancaleone Calabro per aver cercato di proteggere la donna amata, militante del PCI. La vita al confino, l'apprendistato di un intellettuale coinvolto, quasi suo malgrado, nella politica, la scoperta di un'altra Italia da parte di un settentrionale, vengono raccontate come metafora di una condizione esistenziale comune al destino umano.
Stefano, il protagonista, incarna la solitudine dell'uomo che, messo di fronte all'impegno storico e civile, è costretto a guardare la vita "come dalla finestra del carcere" nella monotonia di un paesaggio di cielo e di mare, sempre uguale e indifferente.
