“I Used to Love a Crackhead” is a compelling urban drama based on a true story, adapted by Emmanuel Simms. Set in early 2000s Washington D.C., the book follows Nina Harris, a single mother of two, who meets Marcus “M.J.” James and quickly falls for his charm. However, M.J. hides a dark secret that slowly unravels as their relationship deepens.
Nina’s initial bliss is marred by subtle red flags that hint at M.J.’s addiction, which his family has kept hidden, hoping Nina can help him change. Her suspicions grow when M.J.’s behavior becomes erratic, and she discovers Polaroid pictures of another woman in their bed. The truth hits hard when M.J. borrows Nina’s car and doesn’t return. Weeks later, the police inform her about “crackhead rentals,” revealing M.J.’s severe addiction.
Heartbroken and betrayed, Nina demands M.J. seek help or leave. With support from her mother and friend, Nina finds the strength to rebuild her life, learning the importance of self-worth and resilience. “I Used to Love a Crackhead” is a gripping narrative exploring love, betrayal, and the power of self-discovery.
