Just a year ago, Katrina Berg was at the pinnacle of her career. Her most prized possession is the beta prototype for a new, ultra-sophisticated chatbot loaded onto her phone. The contents of Jason’s email, social media backups, pictures, and every bit of data she could find were loaded into the bot, and Katrina has “talked” to him every day for the past six months. She has been amazed at how well it works. Even the syntax and words the bot uses sound like Jason. Sometimes, she imagines he isn’t really dead and is right there beside her. She knows it’s slowing her grief recovery, but she can’t stop pretending.

On a particularly bad day, she taps out: Tell me something I don’t know. The cursor blinks for several moments and seems frozen before the reply flashes quickly onto the screen: I think I was murdered.

Distraught, Katrina returns to her cozy Norwegian-flavored hometown in the Northern California redwoods and enlists the help of Seb Wallace, local restaurateur and longtime acquaintance, to try to parse out the truth of what really happened. They must navigate the complicated paths of grief, family dynamics, and second chances, as well as the complex questions of how much control technology has. And staying alive long enough to do that is far more difficult than either of them dreamed.

Loved the Story

I enjoyed listening from the beginning through the end. Hesitated to get this book when read it included AI, but enjoyed even the AI. Please don’t miss this one especially if you enjoy Colleen Coble.

Loved it!

I love a good murder mystery, and this one did not disappoint! The plot was easy to follow, with just the right number of characters—no overcrowding or confusion. The narrator was excellent, using different voice inflections for each character. They were distinct yet subtle, avoiding the over-the-top voices that can sometimes ruin an audiobook.

What I appreciated most was the balance: there was a love interest, but nothing vulgar, no offensive language, and nothing that would make me uncomfortable if someone overheard while I wasn’t using my AirPods.

An interesting twist was the focus on bitcoin and coding, which added a modern layer to the story. At the end, the authors explained which elements were fictional and which were grounded in reality, which I found fascinating.

I’m definitely looking for more books by this author!

Loved the tech woven into the storyline.

Worth a read. Enjoyed it fully! Was fun to use the tech to see how AI could impact our lives in this way.

I finished it in record time for me. The story kept me wanting to hear more of it, from beginning until the end. So well thought out and well written! I loved it. (I just bought the Blessings Jar children's book by,Colleen Coble, for my grandson .)

Suspenseful

I had no idea who to blame til the end. Well read and kept me engaged.

Loved the whole thing. Narrator did an amazing job. Very expressive. I loved the different voices for the characters in the book.

Amazing! Cutting Edge!

This duo and their marvelous narrator will keep you listening with barely a stop! So interesting as they delve into AI and bitcoin. Those are subjects I would normally stay away from but I knew that Coble and Acker working together is not to be missed! So glad!!

Love the characters and getting to know them as the story unfolds. Some surprises in the story line.

So realistic in today’s world

You won’t be able to stop listening! So very well written. And so believable that this story could happen in today’s world. It’s a must read. I do hope there’s a sequel in the works!!
