Humberto’s extensive criminal activities catch up with him when he is caught using illegal drugs publicly by a Chicago police officer in Little Village. When his new partner, Troy, discovers he’s locked up in nearby Cook County Jail, he does all he can to help Humberto through his difficult time to demonstrate the care he has for him. The incarceration, which both of them expect to be a brief stay in jail, turns out not being what they assume due to Humberto’s extensive RAP sheet of which Troy has had no prior knowledge. The extreme challenges presented to both of them and to their relationship result in a lifelike story detailing what it is like to be a nonviolent criminal amongst many criminals in Cook County Jail as well as what it is like to be the inmate’s supportive care-person outside the jail. Humberto’s difficulties inside the jail include ongoing physical threats from inmates, physical attacks from violent criminals, as well as fears of being deported from the United States. Troy’s extremely frustrating challenges in remaining supportive of Humberto, while dealing with the jail's difficult system and policies, are comprehensively exposed throughout the adventures. Troy’s main goal is to meet Humberto’s needs and demands while keeping himself emotionally and financially secure throughout the ordeal. Troy’s biggest personal challenge, however, involves his inner conflict. During Humberto’s absence, Troy has great difficulty in remaining faithful to his new partner due to his penchant for cruising men who are nightly temptations on the streets.
