Acerca de esta escucha
James White captures all the breathtaking excitement of the perils and rewards of the future's medical frontiers in this gripping book.
Sector General: a massive deep-space hospital station on the Galactic Rim, where human and alien medicine meet. It's 384 levels and thousands of staff members are supposedly able to meet the needs of any conceivable alien patient–though that capacity is always being strained as more (and stranger) alien races turn up to join the galactic community. Sentient viruses, interspecies romances, undreamed-of institutional catering problems–it all lands on Sector General's doorstep.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Freelancing in galactic space is hazardous to your health, unless you’re Blake Brown, a 400-plus-year-old vampire exiled from Earth. After serving as an intelligence agent in the Fredorian Rangers for 20 years, he has his sights set on trying out the mercenary bounty system with his abductee brother, Seth Williams. It’s one thing to find a bounty or contract they can attempt with so little to their name. Fulfilling it is another. Starting off small, they take a simple contract to retrieve a stolen ship. The problem is the thief is Alcarez, a mad cyborg with a small army.

A wicked snowstorm had blown in from the north and the roads were a mess. Recently split from his one-time girlfriend, there was now nothing holding Cameron Decker here in the little backwater mountain town of Larksburg Stand. Time to get back to college, back to Stanford. Seeing a guy knee-deep in slush at the side of the road, he pulled to the curb and waved him over. The guy smacked his head getting in—knocked his watch cap askew. Only then did Cameron notice—noticed that the individual couldn’t possibly be human.

Something is coming -- throwing the balance of the realm into chaos. Darkmoor is a dumping ground for other planets, where criminals are left to fend for themselves in an environment incapable of electricity or modern innovation. But what makes a criminal? Over the centuries, these outlaws have banded together to form communities, basic infrastructure, and even religion. Out of this forsaken place, a hero will arise, and a secret will emerge that could devastate the pampered lives of those on the surrounding planets and the entire realm. Some are eager to take advantage.

The System is here! Most of the population of the planet were suddenly turned into zombies, while the rest acquired new abilities. Abilities that let them run from the zombies, save themselves, hide, and try to survive. But it only takes one bite that almost always means death. Our hero was standing in line when the apocalypse came. He was lucky at first to be caught in a crowd when the zombies tried to bite him on the leg. Really lucky, because those trials unlocked new abilities for him.

Classical Sci-fi At its Best
James White is amongst the greats when it comes to speculative aliens and world building. Though much of the aspects of the stories are seen through a more "Vintage sci-fi" filter, one could equate the stores to classics like Star Trek (the use of empathy, telepathy, and other what we currently refer to as "metaphysical" abilities being wildly popular during the time of publication). But taking this into account The world created is seamless and makes these contacts seem natural within it. The interaction of the multi species staff through the hospital setting is both entertaining and at times hair raising. with a balance of ethics, morality, and overall interacting with beings with different mentalities.
The narrator did a fantastic job of adapting the source materia and keeping true to the characters as they were presented in the original text.

Long-time Fans Rejoice!
James White's Sector General hospital-in-space stories have been a favorite of mine for decades.
This book starts with an injured O'Mara being saddled with the care of an infant Hudlarian. His solutions for caring for the gigantic being are quite innovative. Then we are introduced to the newbie, Dr. Conway. His attempts to solve the varied puzzles of alien health problems are intriguing. All set against the vast complex, and many personalities, of a multi-species hospital in space. I can hardly wait for the next one!!!
