Kim Woodard Osterholzer
Acerca de esta escucha
You’re pregnant. You’re hoping for a natural birth. You’re hoping for a magically natural birth. A crazy part of you is even curious about homebirth. But homebirth is crazy, isn’t it?
Homebirth: Safe & Sacred is written by Kim Osterholzer, a homebirth midwife who’s welcomed nearly 600 babies into life since she started attending births in 1993. Kim’s been a certified professional midwife since 2002, and is also mother to two homeborn children and grandmother to three homeborn children.
Homebirth: Safe & Sacred is a carefully researched foray into the many misconceptions surrounding the safety of American birth—the safety of both American homebirth and American hospital birth. In it, Kim describes homebirth and homebirth midwifery with an in-depth look at statistics, training, and the quality of care midwives are able to provide their clients. Kim then leads listeners through an examination of our national maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity rates—sadly, the worst in the developed world—and how they appear to relate to the philosophy and policies of our current medical system.
Homebirth: Safe & Sacred promises to be an enlightening listen for anyone concerned and curious about American birth, but Kim crafted it especially for families who’d consider giving birth at home if they thought it was safe.

Historia
Midwife Kim Osterholzer ushers listeners behind the doors of Amish homes as she recounts her adventures answering God's call to the craft of midwifery. Kim chronicles her nine-year apprenticeship grappling with the nuances and idiosyncrasies of homebirth. She recounts the beauty and painstaking effort of those early years spent catching babies by the light of crackling woodstoves, oil lamps, and lanterns. Every birth enthralled her, whether it involved halting hemorrhages, sharing breath with tiny lungs, or bouncing through wild rides in ambulances.

Do you want to use your faith to have a natural childbirth, no matter the environment you end up in? Going through my youngest daughter’s birth without the support of my spouse was a life changing and faith growing experience. I made changes to my birth plan to accommodate my change in location, having my young son in tow, and needing additional support for the labor and delivery. Having the support of midwives, the flexibility of birthing at a center, and the power of prayer made all the difference in my experience.

Today, we are told that medical interventions increased our lifespan and single-handedly prevented masses of deaths. But is this really true? Dissolving Illusions details facts and figures from long-overlooked medical journals, books, newspapers, and other sources. Using myth-shattering information, this book shows that vaccines, antibiotics, and other medical interventions are not responsible for the increase in lifespan and the decline in mortality from infectious diseases.

It’s time for a childbirth revolution. Childbirth has always been, and always will be, a significant rite of passage that transforms a woman into a mother. However, the modern approach to maternity care fails women, families, and care providers with outdated practices that center the needs of institutions rather than individuals. In this audiobook, Rachel Reed demonstrates how childbirth can be reclaimed to center women and support birth physiology.

Motherhood is a challenge. Unfortunately, our worldly culture offers moms little in the way of real help. Mamas only connect to celebrate surviving another day and to share in their misery, rather than rejoice in what God has done and to build each other up in hard times. There has a be a better way, a biblical way, for mamas to grow and thrive. M Is for Mama offers advice, encouragement, and scripturally sound strategies seasoned with a little bit of humor to help you embrace the challenge of biblical motherhood and raise your children with love and wisdom.

With Transformed by Birth, unabridged and read by the author, Dr. Britta Bushnell has created the transformative, intelligent, and empowering pregnancy and childbirth guide you’ve been waiting for. This audiobook embraces birth as a rite of passage in which you open to the unbidden, embody your own wisdom, and gain freedom from limiting beliefs. Parents giving birth today do so within a society highly influenced by underlying ideals - including a need for control and certainty, vilification of pain, and reverence for intellectual knowledge and technology, among others. Dr. Bushnell brings clarity and awareness to these foundational ideals.

Historia

Historia
Mayim Bialik was the child star of the popular 1990s TV sitcom Blossom, but she definitely didn't follow the typical child-star trajectory. Instead, Mayim got her Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA, married her college sweetheart, and had two kids. Mayim then did what many new moms do - she read a lot of books, talked with other parents, and she soon started questioning a lot of the conventional wisdom she heard about the "right" way to raise a child. That's when she turned to attachment parenting.

And here's your first hint: Focus on what you can be doing for her rather than what's happening to her. She's pregnant. She knows that. You know that. And her one 152 baby books tell her exactly what she can expect. Your job is to learn what you can do between the stick turning blue and the drive to the delivery room to make the next nine months go as smoothly as possible.

Must read for those who are expecting
This book is a must read for anyone considering a homebirth, or for anyone considering a hospital birth. Kim beautifully lays out, with all supporting data, the safety and sacredness of giving birth at home in a way that will set you at ease. I am an RN and have birthed at home and will continue to do so, thanks to Kim’s excellent synthesis of the research. Highly recommend!

An amazing book made even better hearing it in Kim’s own voice full of passion and love
Throughout her book, Kim beautifully defends homebirth as a safe and life-changing experience for most women who choose it. Giving researched statistics and facts upon facts, she succeeds in her goal of quelling the fears and correcting the misinformation surrounding homebirth. I wish I had come across it years ago - I would have confidently chosen a homebirth much earlier. In preparation for my own first homebirth, I read a few books to learn how this would differ from my epidural, pitocin hospital births, and of all the books I read, this should have been my first - it simply and honestly answers all the questions I ever had.
Through each chapter, she eloquently weaves the story of a midwife attending a woman’s first homebirth; one can’t help but imagine that the heart of the midwife in the story reflects Kim’s own heart toward birth. In fact, the reader can hear Kim’s passion for birth, babies, and moms in every sentence of her book. Her descriptions of the magic and beauty (and safety!) experienced during a birth at home and midwifery care should encourage every woman to at least consider it as an option. Because each chapter of this book answers the questions and concerns of a mother considering homebirth, I would gift her book to any woman considering it for herself and her baby. In fact, I’ve already sent it to one friend and I plan to gift it to many more.

What a resource!
Amazing listen! Even if you aren’t currently considering a home birth, this book is a great resource to help educate you about your options, but also on other matters, such as delayed cord clamping + WHY, immediate undisrupted skin to skin contact + WHY. This book is a great tool for equipping mothers + fathers no matter where they plan to birth. Most importantly this book shares the beautiful option of home birth and for what is undeniably safe experience. If you have never tried to conceive yet, a must listen + a great tool to empower, educate and prepare in knowledge to help shape what you want in your care up until your birthing experience . Kim is also an amazing soul with such credibility in her field and experience + a master at facilitating all things birth and connection in this season for families. So grateful to see her wisdom + easily digested and articulated facts on this topic. Will be listening again, and again.
