A well-written novel in which Eddy has to solve the mystery while being tempted by an old flame. Holds your attention to the end.

This is an amazing story about a murder mystery in the 1940s in epic Hollywood. The story gave you feel of actually being there and you could imagine the whole story as your listening. Jeff Holman does an excellent job narrating and bringing this book to life. The mystery had enough twists and turns to keep you guessing not just about the murders but about Eddie and love life. The other point I love about the book is that it’s not a dark a dreary murder mystery there are comedic lines and awkward situations that happen with normal everyday life. I couldn’t stop laughing.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves oldies and the private eye detectives. If you need a fun mystery this is the book for you!

Lots of Fun

This is the second book in the Eddy Hart P.I. series. I have not read the first book and had no trouble following along or understanding the character's motivations. This a stand alone book [no cliffhanger ending].

Here, Eddy is a P.I. who lives/works in Hollywood during the 1940's. He is hired to get the photos/negatives taken of a starlet before she was a starlet and if these photos were to get published, it would ruin her career. The first problem, he knows the starlet - she's his former fiancee. The second problem, the gossip columns are writing that he is involved with the starlet which might cause a problem with his current partner/fiance. Third problem, the mob's involved, which means bodies begin to turn up around Eddy.

This is a fun mystery which weaves in real-life mobsters such as Bugsy Siegel and Mickey Cohen. Eddy is an enjoyable character and I especially enjoyed his smart and funny fiance/partner. The supporting cast of lawyers, gossip columnists, criminals and cops were very entertaining. This reminded me of a lighter film noir detective films of the 30's/40's. Lots of fun.

The narrator used a lot of different voices/accents for the various characters - some hit the mark, others less so.

I think Jeff did a great job performing all the voices for this book. The voices were all different enough to keep track of the characters.

Private Eye Hart was fun and flowed nicely

The description of the characters in this book made it easy to envision them in Los Angeles and Malibu. The twists and turns kept me on the hook to continue to see what would happen to Dancer and Claire. Not sure what accent Jamison was portraying, but the character story line was enjoyable.

Fun read, fantastic performance

DP Gertner’s endearing and semi-tough Eddy Hart returns in this second novel in a forthcoming series of noir(ish) private eye romps through Hollywood in the 40s. Populated with a colorful array of characters nasty and nice, the story moves along apace with actual old-time mobsters like Ben Siegel (don’t call him Bugsy) and Mickey Cohen keeping Hart guessing — and wisecracking — until the last page. A supporting cast of bagmen and gunsels, movie stars and wannabes, a not-entirely-dumb-blonde receptionist, and assorted hangers-on complete the lineup. Every character is nimbly voiced by Jeff Holman, whose imaginative portrayals — underscored by Eddy Hart’s subtle sighs and almost-visible eye rolls — bring the story to life with humor and dexterity. A fun romp through 1940's Hollywood.............

Hollywood Hart is the second in this series starring Eddy Hart, a private detective working in the Los Angeles of the 1940's era. Although I could tell that I was missing certain events from the first book, the author introduces enough background that I could easily follow the storyline of this second book. The book begins with the mobster Mickey Cohen hiring Eddy to look into a ledger supposedly stolen from a mob accountant. From this point, the story takes off in so many twists and turns, misdirection, and false leads that I never could guess what actually happened until the very end of the book when the author told me. Rather than being confusing, the mystery was incredibly entertaining. Watching Eddy pulled in so many directions - the mob, the Japanese Yakuza, the Chinese Tongs, oil embargos, blackmail schemes, Hollywood bigwigs - kept me listening with rapt attention. Mix in some very colorful (and often hilarious) characters and a historical look at life in Los Angeles as WWII was looming on the horizon, and you have a fun and exciting story.

My review on Jeff Holman is mixed. Although I loved his portrayal of Eddy, I hated his over-exaggerated, almost cartoonish portrayal of most of the other characters. When Eddy was speaking, which luckily was the majority of the book, Holman used the perfect amount of tone and emphasis to show Eddy's dry wit and sarcastic attitude. However, for characters like his secretary, the butler and the attorney, I cringed and wanted to cover my ears. If Holman performed all the characters without the ridiculous voices, I think he would be a fabulous narrator.

A Really good story

Great story line, unique characters, and a lot of fun to read.
The book is enjoyable and I would want to read more if there was a different narrator.
A pity about the stupid voices and accents, Jamieson the butler is the worst.
