Acerca de esta escucha

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Lonesome Dove, Larry McMurtry follows up Books and Literary Life with this final installment in his memoir trilogy. Tinged with his wry humor and Texas swagger, Hollywood is McMurtry’s anecdote-filled take on Tinseltown from the year his Horseman, Pass By was adapted into Hud (1963) to the year he wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain (2005).

A truly wonderful and amazing listen.

"Lonesome Dove" being my favorite novel and "The Last Picture Show" among my top five films, I began listening filled with admiration for McMurtry. When he signed off, I was filled with admiration of a different kind. He is not at all as I imagined, nor is his writing career. Every page was filled with surprises and laughs.

Way to go, Larry.

Loved it!

As a fan of McMurtry and a rising screenwriter, I was interested in whatever stories McMurtry had on his time in Hollywood. The stories were humorous, compelling, and eye opening. McMurtry is a witty writer who has had an unlikely and fascinating life. All that being said, I wish I could get this particular narrator on all of the audiobooks I listen to. He delivers McMurtry’s wit and captures his tone perfectly. This was one of the best, if not the best, audiobook I’ve listened to on Audible.

Odd But Entertaining

This is an odd but entertaining book, McMurtry is more than a bit of a curmudgeon and the reader does an exemplary job of representing him. A bit too short to use up 1 entire credit, the chapters themselves are so short that McMurtry actually makes a joke out of one. I wish that he had been more willing to go into more depth about several of his better known projects, but sadly there are too many times when he just summarized them with a few offhand remarks. If you’re looking to find out more about the production of Lonesome Dove than was already widely known, this isn’t the book for you. All and all it was still quite an enjoyable read and reinforced what I had already decided about Larry McMurtry, that he definitely marched to the beat of his own drum and I’m sorry I never had the opportunity to meet him and thank him for all the hours of pleasure his many books have afforded me.

An interesting view to look from!

Written by a screenwriter from his view. I have never heard a story like this before. I had to opportunity to see the Hollywood social theater from his viewpoint and this was very interesting! Great writer! I instantly looked for any other books written by him and bought the other one available on audible.com. Witty, brilliant, savvy perceptions of people and their purpose. Truly fine company and I was grateful to be so entertained!

Artful writing style; natural voice.

I wouldn’t call it a memoir. It’s a series of recollections. I enjoyed it, but too short for a book. Memoirella?
