Even and meandering

This book isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking for an exciting plot, for twists and turns, you won’t find it here. It’s the simple story of a normal man’s normal life. Events and people we can relate to. It’s even and calm. Trigger warning, though: it contains a description of a dog being euthanized. Fair warning if you have trouble with such things as I do.

Mitford lovers this is for you!

Everything about this book is satisfying! The performance is spot on, the best I’ve ever heard. The main character is Henry, a common guy who draws you into his life with such a sweetness that you’ll want to read it all in a day. If you love the Mitford series, you will love this book!

Nothing Happens If You're Okay With That 3.5*

It's just going day by day with Henry and his wife and their very, very ordinary lives. It's kind of funny because at times you actually think something will happen, but no, not really, haha. The narrator is what really saves the book. He manages to make all this ordinariness somehow okay and you just plod along as a voyeur with no better choices to look. Besides, I just enjoyed listening to him read! The book itself is not bad per se, it's just nothing exciting in the least because there is no story arc, tension, or dynamic, interesting characters.

Tho I preferred emily alone...

This was a seemingly completely accurate portrait of a marriage of upper middle class people in their 70s. Rich in detail of the humdrum parts of life which inform a larger lived experience. Petty inner thoughts, routines, the ways couples work together -and around-each other over the course of 50 years. I saw in my own parents and here that as one’s life narrows in focus, things that are no big deal become very important. Cleaning gutters, choice of stamp to mail Christmas cards, family disagreements about variations on a casserole. Somehow, O’Nan seems to make the micro-moments of a life so informative of a deeper truth about the human experience- Here as well as in Emily Alone and in last night at the lobster.

A wonderful read

This is the second time I’ve listed this book. The author captures life perfectly. It is a moving and wonderful tail and this is a book that will stay with you for a long time. Read all three in the series and you’ll love it

Eh?

A very dull man in a very dull book. His life and routines may be interesting to some but to me they were just tedious

Mundane and boring

Just not my cup of tea, yet I listened to the whole thing, waiting for something to happen. Kind of like A Man Called Ove, but with no humor or plot.

Dull

If a woman had written this, it never would have found a publisher. Home Depot runs does not a story make.
