Acerca de esta escucha
“Health Attitude...presents an optimistic future where innovation, technology, empathy and sound business principles collide into a 'big-bang' of better healthcare!”
“When we look back ten years from now on the revolution that occurred in healthcare, John Patrick’s book Health Attitude will be viewed as one of the prologues of that revolution. We tend to overestimate technology in the short term and underestimate its role in the long term. Simply put, this book presents an optimistic future where innovation, technology, empathy and sound business principles collide into a 'big-bang' of better healthcare!” (Stephen K. Klasko, MD, MBA, president and CEO, Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health System)
“As one of the world’s technology pioneers, John Patrick is a sought after innovator and strategic thinker. In Health Attitude, Patrick paints a grim portrait of America’s healthcare system today, then unveils a canvas upon which we can create a better future using technology.” (Skip Prichard, president and CEO, OCLC)
“John Patrick brings a fresh and insightful perspective to the healthcare debates in the U.S. His experience as technologist, entrepreneur and patient enables new thinking and innovative strategies that should drive policy, planning and delivery.” (James G. Neal, Columbia University librarian emeritus)
“Health Attitude offers a valuable perspective for a layperson who makes healthcare decisions for his or her family and parents. It provides great hope for improved and more affordable healthcare ahead.” (Peg Grimm, Pennsylvania health-care consumer)
“John Patrick's Health Attitude clearly lays out a roadmap toward healthcare efficiency, which will result in an affordable and effective wellness based system in the future.” (Robin Felder, PhD, chair, MedicalAutomation.org and professor of pathology, University of Virginia)

In The Long Fix, physician and health-care CEO Vivian S. Lee, MD, cuts to the heart of the health-care crisis. The problem with the way medicine is practiced, she explains, is not so much who's paying, it's what we are paying for. Insurers, employers, the government, and individuals pay for every procedure, prescription, and lab test, whether or not it makes us better - and that is both backward and dangerous.

You don't have to do a dangerous job to endure a health-destroying, possibly life-threatening workplace. Just ask the manager in a senior finance role whose immense workload required frequent all-nighters, leading to alcohol and drug addiction. Or the dedicated news media producer whose commitment to getting the story resulted in a 60-pound weight gain thanks to having no down time to eat properly or exercise. These individuals are not exceptions. Every industry is filled with them, and the costs, to both employees and their companies, is enormous.

The biggest problem in American health care is us. Do you know how to tell good health care from bad health care? Guess again. As patients, we wrongly assume the "best" care is dependent mainly on the newest medications, the most complex treatments, and the smartest doctors. But Americans look for health-care solutions in the wrong places. For example, hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved each year if doctors reduced common errors and maximized preventive medicine.

Offering examples of how to make medicine better for the healers and those they serve, If I Betray These Words profiles clinicians across the country who are tough, resourceful, and resilient, but feel trapped between the patient-first values of their Hippocratic oath and the business imperatives of a broken healthcare system. If I Betray These Words confronts the threat and broken promises of moral injury—what it is; where it comes from; how it manifests; and who’s fighting back against it. We need better healthcare—for patients and for the workforce. It’s time to act.

Historia
In their bestselling first book, Prediction Machines, eminent economists Ajay Agrawal, Joshua Gans, and Avi Goldfarb explained the simple yet game-changing economics of AI. Now, in Power and Prediction, they go deeper, examining the most basic unit of analysis: the decision. The authors explain that the two key decision-making ingredients are prediction and judgment, and we perform both together in our minds, often without realizing it.

In 2020, an estimated 5.8 million Americans had Alzheimer’s, and more than half a million died because of the disease and its devastating complications. Sixteen million caregivers are responsible for paying as much as half of the $226 billion annual costs of their care. As more people live beyond their 70s and 80s, the number of patients will rise to an estimated 13.8 million by 2025. Part case studies, part meditation on the past, present and future of the disease, The Problem of Alzheimer's traces Alzheimer’s from its beginnings to its recognition as a crisis.

The author of the highly acclaimed Overdiagnosed describes seven widespread assumptions that encourage excessive, often ineffective, and sometimes harmful medical care. You might think the biggest problem in medical care is that it costs too much. Or that health insurance is too expensive, too uneven, too complicated - and gives you too many forms to fill out. But the central problem is that too much medical care has too little value.

Medical doctor and national bestselling author of Make America Healthy Again Nicole Saphier reveals how politicization of the COVID-19 pandemic has baffled the public by creating distrust, fueling conspiracy theories, and making it harder for Americans to understand the necessary path forward. The pandemic has resulted in a failure of government, much of which is unavoidable in a unique disaster scenario. However, the rampant politicization of science has hopelessly muddied the water and knee-jerk anti-Trumpism made it all worse.

Why does it cost so much and what can be done?
If you are a layperson trying to understand why the cost per capita of healthcare in the US is so much higher than the rest of the developed world with no better and often times worse outcomes this is the book for you. John Patrick combines his own very relevant experience with a prodigious amount of research to address each of the major elements of cost on a macro and micro basis and comes up with suggestions for significant productivity improvements and cost reductions. He makes a compelling case that the current Fee for Service Model has to shift to a more patient centric, Fee for Value approach. After listening to his well written, thorough review of this very complex subject it's hard to disagree with him.

Not a "must read" by any means
if you read widely about health care policy, you'll find little new in this book. That said, the final chapter has interested me in reading the author's earlier book, Net Attitude.

Reasonable solutions, comprehensive & eye-opening
The problems described are so vast that they seem not a boulder but rather a mountain that this author skillfully picks up, turns over and twists around to look at from every side. The solutions offered seem reasonable, sensible and achievable. All in all a very clear view of a stupendously huge problem with many chilling and disturbing aspects of which I had no idea before reading this very, very good book. It is to be hoped that policymakers in the new Administration will read this book.

A must read.
Healthcare in the United States is often characterized as being broken. The root cause for this is the cost of getting this care to all who need it in a timely and effective manner. John Patrick, through his Unraveling and Solving the Complexities of Healthcare is providing us with a roadmap, admittedly a complex roadmap, to how we can solve those two core issues. In his book Dr. Patrick does not shy away from the magnitude of the task. However, he points to the technological advances that have already been made well as advances that are being developed now. Furthermore, he offers a positive view of the technological and managerial advances that are to come. Simply put, the book is a monumental work!
