In Part 1 “The Night of the Boy with the Heart of Fire” Justin Jordan is troubled by nightmares in which he is pursued relentlessly by a black-cowled ghoul in a carriage. Justin fears that these nightmares are not merely bad dreams. He believes that a demon might be trying to possess him or kill him. In this battle of good against evil, Justin is helped by two mysterious girls who appear at his hour of greatest need. In Part 2 “The Day of the Girl with the Broken Heart” Justin meets a young woman named Philomena. As their budding romance grows, dark forces rise up in full force and threaten to destroy both of them. *********************** Excerpt: They went to dozens of homes that evening. They also visited numerous homeless persons living in alleys or under highway overpasses. ....... Everyone -- from children to elderly persons -- was grateful and astonished by the generosity of this mysterious young man who appeared out of nowhere, then vanished into the night. They seemed to travel from site to site almost instantly. After seemingly spending many hours reverse trick-or-treating, Justin sat down on the steps of the apartment building from which they had just visited two apartments. “I’m exhausted,” he remarked. The smaller girl touched his shoulder and instantly his energy level was completely replenished. He felt like he had just enjoyed a long sleep and a good meal. “Thank you for that energy boost and for sending me on this mission this evening. I have given away a lot of money tonight, but I’m the one who feels like a million dollars.” He stood up. “Let’s head to the next destination.” “You did well, Justin,” the taller girl commended him. “Our evening’s mission is complete.” Justin nodded. “It must be very late. I’m surprised that persons are still opening their doors when we knock; it must be after midnight by now.” He glanced at the time on his cell phone, and his eyes widened upon seeing that it was only eight o’clock. “This can’t be correct!” “The time on your phone is correct,” the smaller girl said. “How did we go so far and do so much in such a short period of time?” “Time flows differently for us, Justin.” “Within a river, currents at different depths flow at different speeds, yet all the currents flow within the same river,” the taller girl said. Noticing the puzzled expression on his face, she added, “It’s a bit complicated, Justin.” “Okay,” he said, accepting that there were mysteries that he could not understand. “I really like this magic wallet!” When both girls frowned at him, he amended his statement, “I really like this miraculous wallet.” “That’s better,” the taller girl said. “Are we going to do this again next year or was it just a one-time thing?” “If we need to do it next All Hallow’s Eve, then we will do it.” “Don’t you know?” “We’re not omniscient, Justin.” “Omniscient means having total knowledge, knowing everything,” the smaller girl explained. “Yes, I know what it means,” Justin said, somewhat impatiently. “The blank look on your face seemed to indicate otherwise,” the taller girl said. “Wow! You two don’t pull your punches.” “We aren’t planning to punch you.” “It’s just an expression.” “I know,” she replied with a slight smile.
