A Real HBCU Love Story - Told Through Many Voices

In full disclosure I did not attend an HBCU. I am a proud graduate of James Madison University.

Now...This book provided both depth and breadth as it relates to HBCUs. It was made clear that HBCUs are more than marching bands and D9, which is often the narrative projected. It is a well balanced story, starting with the history and ending with the current state of affairs.

I appreciated the inclusion of many HBCU voices! Not merely focused on the same few. The smaller lesser known (to me) voices and perspectives were given the same respect as others. Hearing the "Why?" of the HBCU Presidents was most impactful. The palpable passion of the Presidents further demonstrated their desire to have their schools exemplified as institutions of higher learning that inhabit a committed, caring, culture.

This book didn't shy away from the challenges faced by HBCUs and what it will take to sustain them. It was made clear that HBCUs are one with the communities in which they reside, and not separate from or independent of those communities. I wasn't expecting to hear about this very important aspect on the value of HBCUs.
