Acerca de esta escucha

Until 1970, the Vatican had never recognized a woman as a Doctor of the Church. Today, there are four: Teresa of Ávila, Catherine of Siena, Thérèse of Lisieux, and Hildegard of Bingen. Now you can get an in-depth look at their lives with award-winning religious studies scholar Elizabeth A. Dreyer.

Despite living in different countries, centuries, and cultural contexts, the four women Doctors of the Church are all boundless sources of wisdom and faith. Through Prof. Dreyer’s engaging 12-lecture audio course, you will take in each woman’s powerful theology, letting her spirituality guide you.

Professor Dreyer is an expert in medieval women mystics and the role of women in Christianity. She is the author or coauthor of 10 books, including Making Sense of God: A Woman’s Perspective (2008), which won first place in the Catholic Press Association’s Gender Issues category.

As you explore the historical context that gave rise to these women’s ideas, you will learn how to retrieve aspects of their theological thought in a critical and relevant way today. Including women’s perspectives in Church teachings helps us broaden our theological understanding and reminds us that all Christians are invited to be theologians.

Join Prof. Dreyer to discover new depths of the Christian theological tradition with Hildegard, Catherine, Teresa, and Thérèse.

This course is part of the Learn25 collection and includes a free PDF study guide.

Another Great Learn25 Offering

This company puts out some really great stuff. I liked this quite a bit and, despite teaching theology and medieval philosophy, I still learned a lot.
After some introductory comments, each of these women receives two lectures: One an overview of their life, work, and thought. In the second, Professor Dreyer offers some of her own insights about why the thought of these women is relevant to men and women today. She will not fail to give you much to think about and meditate on.

Ignore reviewers who have given this course a down-rating because they were scandalized to learn it was about... women. And narrated by a woman! These comments are in no way justifiable criticisms of Professor Dreyer's excellent work. Such comments say more about the people who make them than about this audio course.

Great inspiration yet easy listening

Easy to listen lectures about 4 women doctors of the Catholic Church. Each of them were in their individual way exceptional; through their sincere spirituality, social bravery and intense love for both the divine / god & humanity.

Mrs Elizabeth Dreyers voice has a nice tone and pace, and I can hear that she knows the topics. Occasionally, she shows her admiration but mostly she tries to describe the whole story with nuances in a historical context.

I did learn a lot…

… but the production didn’t seem as professional as most recorded books. Some words were mispronounced when in other languages.
The book was best taken in small amounts, to allow time for thought and consideration.
Kudos to the author though, for properly pronouncing “Lisieux,” Therese’s native city. Too many Americans just say “Lees-oo.”

See the Saints as humans.

If you ever wanted to know what a Saint is really all about this is your book!! Yes, they did very, hard work, but the pleasure they got out of it was incredible! It's also nice to know that some of the most famous saints were a lot like us. They make mistakes, but they just knew how to make the best of it.Everyone can learn so much about how to make your life better!! It's a great book for anyone and everyone to read.

Deal breaker

I may be able to overlook the feminist slant of this work but when the author refers to the Holy Spirit as “she” I am done.

Love These 4 Great Saints

I very excited to learn more about these 4 amazing saints and doctors of our great Church. I didn’t realize this was going to be academic and dry. The reading and writing were stilted, stiff, academic, dull. I felt like I was in a classroom.
