Nick und Amy Dunne führen eine scheinbar perfekte Ehe - bis Amy an ihrem fünften Hochzeitstag spurlos verschwindet. Der verstörte Ehemann wird zunächst mit Mitleid überschüttet, doch dann wird Amys Tagebuch gefunden. Dies zeichnet ein anderes Bild von Nick: untreu, gefühlskalt und gewalttätig.
