Lo scenario inizialmente serale (topos del fantastico) è complice perfetto dell'ambiguità che lo scrittore vuole creare.
Non è caso la novella è collocata in questo momento del giorno, che favorisce una sorta di dormiveglia, durante il quale è difficile individuare la linea di demarcazione tra realtà e fantasia: "la notte incombe sullo spirito, conquista la fantasia e concede all'immaginazione le più strane visioni" afferma il narratore-protagonista di Garofani rossi.
Un'oscurità non solo reale ma metaforica, mentale, insomma che spegne la luce della ragione e getta ombra sull'attendibilità di ciò che il protagonista giura d'aver "visto e udito". Eppure il suo ricordo è preciso. D'altronde tale esigenza di precisione del narratore è topica della scrittura fantastica, aiuta il lettore a ricomporre i pezzi della storia nella sua investigazione del mistero.
Salvatore Di Giacomo è stato un poeta, drammaturgo e saggista italiano. Fu autore di notissime poesie in lingua napoletana (molte delle quali poi musicate) che costituiscono una parte importante della cultura popolare partenopea. È molto apprezzato come novelliere nero.
Insieme ad Ernesto Murolo, Libero Bovio e E. A. Mario è stato un artefice della cosiddetta epoca d'oro della canzone napoletana. Si iscrisse alla facoltà di medicina, ma smise subito di frequentarla per dedicarsi al giornalismo e alla letteratura.
Fu qualche mese in Germania, di dove mandò al Corriere del mattino varie novelle fantastiche, che ricordavano i racconti romantici tedeschi ma anche le novelle della scapigliatura.
Autore di volumi eruditi (Cronaca del teatro San Carlino, 1891), fu narratore discontinuo, ma dai tratti estremamente delicati e toccanti: Minuetto settecentesco (1883), Pipa e boccale (1893), Novelle napolitane (1914), L'ignoto (1920).
