Dr. Jerome Groopman and Saudi Arabian-born journalist Faiza Saleh Ambah on this edition of Fresh Air. Dr. Groopman is a Harvard Medical School Chair and is Chief of Experimental Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He's also a staff writer in medicine and biology for The New Yorker. His new book is The Anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness. Groopman's previous books are Second Opinions: Stories of Intuition and Choice in a Changing World of Medicine and The Measure of Our Days.
Saudi Arabian-born journalist Faiza Saleh Ambah is currently participating in the five-day Muslim pilgrimage (known as the "hajj") to Mina, Saudi Arabia. It began on January 30th. She's traveling with her two sisters. Over the weekend, 244 people were crushed to death in a stampede. Ambah is writing about her journey for The Christian Science Monitor. She now makes her home in Arlington, VA. (Broadcast Date: February 3, 2004)
