Det är tidigt nittonhundratal och Marie växer upp på Sjövalla gård, där hennes förfäder levt och brukat i flera hundra år. Gården är omgiven av vackra åkrar och tillvaron är bekymmersfri för den bortskämda flickan. Men när hennes far plötsligt dör i spanska sjukan förändras allt. Hon är blott 14 år när den trygghet hon tar för givet försvinner, och moderns nya äktenskap med faderns vän gör inte saken bättre. Hur kan hennes mor göra så mot Maries nyligen bortgångna far? I Maries ögon är det ett stort svek.
Löjtnant Eric Linde dyker upp i en tid av förvirring, stilig i sin ljusblå uniform och ihärdig i sin beundran. Han är lite äldre, flygare och nyskild, och blir en slags trygghet i Maries inre storm. Förlovningen mellan de två är snart ett faktum.
Marie ångrar giftermålet nästan direkt, och Maries egna ambitioner blir allt mer avlägsna i samband med äktenskapet. Efter en tid på flygkrigsskolan i Ljungbyhed får Marie nog, hon direkt vantrivs under de enkla förhållandena. Hon bryter upp med Eric och förverkligar sin dröm att utbilda sig till läkare, liksom sin far.
Trots motstånd och åsikter från precis allt och alla når hon sitt mål och blir landets första kvinnliga kirurg. Men samtidigt lägger sig ett mörker över världen. Det är 1939 och andra världskriget bryter ut...
Anna Sparre (1906-1993) var en svensk författare från Östergötland. Hennes debutroman N:o 14 Sparv anmäler sig utkom år 1943.
