Acerca de esta escucha
From the acclaimed author of Foreskin’s Lament, a memoir of the author’s attempt to escape the biblical story he’d been raised on and his struggle to construct a new story for himself and his family
Shalom Auslander was raised like a veal in a dysfunctional family in the Orthodox community of Monsey, New York: the son of an alcoholic father; a guilt-wielding mother; and a violent, overbearing God. Now, as he reaches middle age, Auslander begins to suspect that what plagues him is something worse, something he can't so easily escape: a story. The story. One indelibly implanted in him at an early age, a story that told him he is fallen, broken, shameful, disgusting, a story we have all been told for thousands of years, and continue to be told by the religious and secular alike, a story called "Feh."
Yiddish for "Yuck."
Feh follows Auslander's midlife journey to rewrite that story, a journey that involves Phillip Seymour Hoffman, a Pulitzer-winning poet, Job, Arthur Schopenhauer, GHB, Wolf Blitzer, Yuval Noah Harari and a pastor named Steve in a now-defunct church in Los Angeles.
Can he move from Feh to merely meh? Can he even dream of moving beyond that?
Auslander's recounting of his attempt to exorcize the story he was raised with—before he implants it onto his children and/or possibly poisons the relationship of the one woman who loves him—isn’t sacred. It is more-than-occasionally profane. And like all his work, it is also relentlessly funny, subversively heartfelt and fearlessly provocative.

Historia
Foreskin's Lament reveals Auslander's youth in a strict, socially isolated Orthodox community, and recounts his rebellion and efforts to make a new life apart from it. Auslander remembers his youthful attempt to win the "blessing bee" (the Orthodox version of a spelling bee), his exile to an Orthodox-style reform school in Israel after he's caught shoplifting Union Bay jeans from the mall, and his 14-mile hike to watch the New York Rangers play in Madison Square Garden without violating the Sabbath.

The rural town of Stockton, New York, is famous for nothing: No one was born there, no one died there, nothing of any historical import at all has ever happened there, which is why Solomon Kugel, like other urbanites fleeing their pasts and histories, decided to move his wife and young son there. Seventh Seltzer has done everything he can to break from the past, but in his overbearing, narcissistic mother's last moments he is drawn back into the life he left behind. At her deathbed, she whispers in his ear the two words he always knew she would: "Eat me." This is not unusual, as the Seltzers are Cannibal-Americans, a once proud and thriving ethnic group, but for Seventh, it raises some serious questions, both practical and emotional.

Living with Dad was like living with a stranger—as a kid I often had trouble connecting and relating to him. But I was always proud of him. Even before Star Trek, I’d see him popping up in bit roles on some of my favorite TV shows like Get Smart, Sea Hunt, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And then one night he brought home Polaroids of himself in makeup and wardrobe for a pilot he was working on. It was December 1964 and nobody had heard of Star Trek. Still, the eight-year-old me had watched enough Outer Limits and My Favorite Martian to understand exactly what I was looking at.

John, an impoverished Scottish minister, has accepted a job evicting the lone remaining occupant of an island north of Scotland—Ivar, who has been living alone for decades, with only the animals and the sea for company. Though his wife, Mary, has serious misgivings about the errand, he decides to go anyway, setting in motion a chain of events that neither he nor Mary could have predicted.

Historia
Maria Bamford is a comedian’s comedian (an outsider among outsiders) and has forever fought to find a place to belong. From struggling with an eating disorder as a child of the 1980s, to navigating a career in the arts (and medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization), she has tried just about every method possible to not only be a part of the world, but to want to be a part of it. In Bamford’s “trademark blend of disarming intimacy and dark whimsy” (Publishers Weekly), Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult brings us on a quest to participate in something.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

To keep the best man from embarrassing himself (and the newlyweds), Nate uses his list of don’ts: Don’t mention the exes, don’t be rated R, and don’t bum everyone out. Nate’s system never fails. She was fifteen when her revered school principal, Malka Leifer, started to single her out. Dassi's cloistered and harsh upbringing meant she didn't have the words for what was happening to her, but she knew it was very, very wrong.

To begin again. To start anew. But it isn't quite working out that way.

Historia
From the outside, Harold is an average seven-year-old third grader growing up in the 1960s. Bored by school. Crushing on a girl. Likes movies and baseball—especially the hometown Boston Red Sox. Enjoys spending time with his grandfather. But inside Harold’s mind, things are a lot more complex and unusual. His thoughts come to him as birds flying through a small rectangle in the middle of his brain. He visits an outdoor cafe on the moon and is invited aboard a spaceship by famed astronomer Carl Sagan.

Honest and moving memoir
Auslander both includes and transcends the fascinating “theological abuse” of his ultra-orthodox Jewish upbringing, with an honest look at both his own life, and the life of the culture we live in, and how the stories we tell, from the religious to the pecuniary, influence how we see ourselves and each other. Auslander brings the reader through his own suffering to a realization of the personal and social importance of compassion, all the while keeping it hilariously funny.

Feh Recognize Feh
This story gives every Feh hope despite the pessimistic overtone. The author challenges the story he was taught, which in turn, causes the reader to question the stories they were taught. Rewriting one’s story is an act of courage but it's far from easy as illustrated in Feh. Still, humankind yearns for something more authentic and questioning what we were told, especially that which no longer serves us, is the beginning of healing and living life more intentionally.

Cynical but fun
I heard him doing an interview just before the book came out, liked his take on religion.
Depressing at times, other times light hearted, but always interesting and entertaining. There were a few moments where I laughed out loud, which is rare for me. Definitely walked away from this one with some things to think about.

Feh’s unite!
I’m late the party for the brilliant Shalom Auslander - but this book is funny and sad and hard and funny and relatable and dark and depressing and funny and also funny. Even late, I’m so glad I made it to the party.

Extraordinary! Brave!
Extraordinary juxtaposition of blatant truth overlapped in story upon story from the biblical to the mundane. Raw sharing that inspires. We can all relate. Love! Thank you Shalom. For the laughter. And the humor and absurdity of FEH. Everywhere. In your life trajectory.

Deep. Wonderful writing.
He will be a celebrated author and philosopher after being dead for a few years. And, if there is a God, die penniless and miserable. I can't do this book any justice here with my writing skillset but I'm going to listen to this book again to savor his. Buy it.

Auslander does it again
Outstanding performance of an outstanding work from an outstanding author. Auslander brilliantly details his thoughts on, and personal experiences with, some of my favorite authors (Kafka, Schopenhauer, Camus), one of my favorite performers (Philip Seymour Hoffman), and some of my least favorite characters (the man upstairs and many of his misguided acolytes). The author adduces his evidence, our evidence, against ourselves as a species, but proffers the individual a small glimpse at personal redemption.
While my Yiddish has grown a little, I found it very helpful, and humorous at times, when he included translations to english in the same line.

Glad that I stayed with it to the end.
Enjoyed hearing the authors’s voice. it can be a tough listen at the beginning and then gets better and better and better all the way to the end.
