Acerca de esta escucha

From one of the most admired international leaders comes a timely, considered, and personal look at the history and current resurgence of fascism today and the virulent threat it poses to international freedom, prosperity, and peace.

At the end of the 1980s, when the Cold War ended, many, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, believed that democracy had triumphed politically once and for all. Yet nearly 30 years later, the direction of history no longer seems certain. A repressive and destructive force has begun to reemerge on the global stage - sweeping across Europe, parts of Asia, and the United States - that to Albright, looks very much like fascism.

Based on her personal experience growing up in Hungary under Hitler and the Communist regime that followed World War II, as well as knowledge gleaned from her distinguished diplomatic career and insights from colleagues around the globe, Albright paints a clear picture of how fascism flourishes and explains why it is once again taking hold worldwide, identifying the factors contributing to its rise. Most importantly, she makes clear what could happen if we fail to act against rising fascist forces today and in the near future, including the potential for economic catastrophe, a lasting spike in terrorist activity, increased sectarian violence, a rash of large-scale humanitarian emergencies, massive human rights violations, a breakdown in multilateral cooperation, and nearly irreparable self-inflicted damage to America's reputation and capacity to lead.

Albright also offers clear solutions, including adjusting to the ubiquity of social media and the changing nature of the workplace and understanding ordinary citizens' universal desire for sources of constancy and morality in their lives. She contends that we must stimulate economic growth and narrow the gap between the rich and poor, urban and rural, women and men, and skilled and unskilled; work across borders to respond to transnational challenges; and ultimately recognize that democracy's unique virtue is its ability - through reason and open debate - to find remedies for its own shortcomings.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Known for her frank manner and direct approach, Albright brings these traits to her performance. Both qualities make her a strong narrator for this serious work.... Her experiences as a diplomat serve her well as a narrator - she is confident, steady, and engaging." (AudioFile)

Excellent book,

An excellent review of the events during tWWI andWWII that facilitated the rise of autocrats and dictators around the world. Too bad she is already in her eighties, She would have made a great fist woman presi

A journey through political history

It took me a while to be engrossed by the story but once it caught hold I was enthralled by the story, the education and Madeleleine's wealth of knowledge and understanding of the history of Facism. My understanding is deeper of the political infrastructure that facism is anchored in. We must as a Democratic society that believe in freedom to recognize the signs and push back at every turn unfortunately the current POTUS and his administration aren't the team of leaders to even attempt to push back. They are co-conspiritors in promoting un Democratic principles. SMDH.

This book should be required reading!

This book would be great as the basis for a college class. It is very well researched and presented in a concise, logical manner.

A modern history of Fascism for our time

Madeleine Albright's book is an important book for people around the world to read. We often wonder how so many horrible dictors or strong men come to power, but as she aptly quoted "it's like plucking a chicken", very slowly horrible things happen and society doesn't repsond. This is a wake up call as we see a decline in democracy and a slide into fascism around the globe.

A MUST-READ IN THE TRUMP ERA

If you only read the chapters about Mussolini and Hitler and the last two or so chapters, you will get "woke" like you've never been so before. Albright was there as the Axis developed and has witnessed the rise of nativist, nationalism, isolationism, and the rise of "otherism" and the unleashing of racism during the 2016 campaign and since.
That Madeleine Albright is seriously concerned should be enough to make the rest of us shake in our boots.
A MUST READ .

Crucial Reading

Read, or listen to, this book. There is no one better positioned to understand the political arena around the world than Madeline Albright. For the history lessons alone, this book is extremely valuable. The wisdom that comes with her experiences, and her passion for the dream of democracy, is golden. Fascism is worth a credit on many, many levels. This book is a well-reasoned argument for each individual to take responsibility for fearless, honorable decisions in the pursuit of a high quality of life for all. She demonstrates how often high ideals are hijacked by opportunists, as well as true believers, who lose their way along the road to building a better world.

TRUTH !!!

Fascism seems to alway rear it's ugly head on the face of an ego hungry man child every generation or so. How lucky are we, to have one in our White House right now.

Perhaps we can see this one give up and go home to his tower, before he deconstructs and destroys even more of our amazing country. The world is laughing at him and us, for giving power to this silly man.

Thank you Madeleine Albright for sharing your knowledge of Fascism with those who can see the truth. I have friends and family who will not see this man in our white house as a home grown Fascist.

A must read for all Americans

Fascism a warning read by Madeline Albright is the history of modern fascism you did not learn in high school or college if you went to public school. This should be required reading for all freshman over the summer instead of Catcher in the Rye. Anyone who cherishes the constitution and its promise of freedom and democracy should read or listen to this book by an incredible diplomat and scholar with a personal story worthy of a book alone.

A dire warning

Madeleine Albright recalls her childhood residing in Europe before WWII. She recalls the fear of being jewish during that time period. Her family eventually made their home in the USA. What I took from the book . Was we can not be complicit. If we see an injustice happening. We need to speak up and use our voices.
