Diviso tra buoni sentimenti e meschine ragioni di ascesa sociale, anche in questo romanzo Jane Austen pone al centro del racconto le atmosfere, i desideri e i vissuti della "gentry" inglese di inizio Ottocento, riuscendo a restituirne gli odori e le aspirazioni più profonde.
