Cuatro años han pasado desde que, en el tren que le conducía de Venecia a Madrid para representar el Otello de Verdi, el cantante catalán el León de Nápoles viera por primera vez a Natalia Manur, a su marido, el banquero Manur, y a Dato, un extraño acompañante. Natalia dormía, el rostro cubierto por una espesa melena, mientras su marido y Dato miraban el paisaje absortos en sus pensamientos. Pero en ese compartimiento, y entre esos cuatro personajes, iba a comenzar una historia de pasiones llevadas hasta sus últimas consecuencias. Últimas al menos para el hombre sentimental, que todos relacionamos con el artista o el pensador y quizá sea en realidad el hombre de negocios, el hombre de acción.
El hombre sentimental fue galardonada en 2000 con el Premio Internazionale Ennio Flaiano de Novela.
