Sort of Like the Hunger Games

Parts of this book reminded me of the Hunger Games, like when they have a contest to see which team can make it through the Hollow which is a wilderness earth like part of the ship they are on.
I liked the part best when they go out and live in the Hollow on there own in preparation for them to live on the planet they are headed for.
What I didn't like it that they could have sex without consequences, although their aren't any sex scenes.

All in all it was a good book and I felt the Narrator was a perfect pick for the main charter's voice.

Generation ship conflict

Pamela Sargent’s Earthseed is the first installment in her Seed trilogy. The basic concept is a generation ship tale. Earth has sent out a generation ship managed by an AI with the capability to ‘grow’ human from DNA supplied by the project’s originators. The story begins as the ship is approaching a potential planet while the AI is training a group of teenagers to survive on the planet. What transpires is tension and conflict among the group. They also run into older adult persons who had undergone a similar phase years earlier, but encountered nonviable planets and subsequently went into cryostasis. Fighting ensures. The teens eventually settle on the planet and the ship heads out for a new destination.

Sargent offers a modest rendition of the classical generation ship theme. While the implementation of an AI controlled ship may be have been creative for its time, the issues and conflicts that arise seem to belie poor planning on the part of the generation ship, since the AI doesn’t seem to have the ability to manage the situation. The story may have more appeal to a younger audience.

The narration is good with decent character distinction. Pacing is smooth.
