Billy Peters forsvandt for 18 år siden. Alle i byen Shipcott, Somerset, tror at Billy blev myrdet – især efter at den pædofile seriemorder Arnold Avery indrømmer at han dræbte seks andre børn og begravede dem på den samme øde hede, som omgiver byen. Billys mor er den eneste der tror, at han er i live. Hun står stadig vagt ved vinduet og spejder efter sin søn, alt i mens resten af hendes familie er ved at falde fra hinanden.
Men hendes 12-årige barnebarn Steven er fast besluttet på at hele det brud, der er opstået imellem hans bedstemor, hans mor, hans 5-årige bror og ham selv. Steven er desperat efter at forene familien igen, og hvis det indebærer at han er nødt til at finde sin onkels lig, vil han gøre det. Han bruger al sin fritid på, fuldstændig metodisk, at grave huller overalt på heden i et desperat håb om at finde et lig, og det er efterhånden det eneste der giver hans liv mening.
I skolen en dag, da han skal lære om brevskrivning, bliver han pludselig grebet af inspiration – uden at afsløre sin identitet skriver han et brev til Arnold Avery i fængslet hvor han spørger om hjælp til at finde liget af ”W.P.” - William ”Billy” Peters.
Dette er startskuddet til en nervepirrende og farlig kattens-leg-med-musen. Steven bruger Avery til at pege det mulige mordsted ud for ham, men Avery vildleder og driller sin mystiske penneven, så han får mulighed for at genopleve sine afskyelige forbrydelser. Og da Avery finder ud af at han korresponderer med en 12-årig dreng, har hans liv pludselig et formål igen...
