Acerca de esta escucha

In Duplicity, the newest thriller from former speaker of the House and best-selling author Newt Gingrich, such an invisible hand overseeing havoc worldwide plays a major role. Gingrich has teamed with former Washington Post reporter and best-selling author Pete Earley to create a highly plausible mix of domestic and global action in this ripped-from-the-headlines thriller.

And, of course, it's set during an American presidential election.

When President Sally Allworth decides to reestablish America's Mogadishu embassy in Somalia weeks before Election Day, her challenger says she is playing politics with American lives. That turns out to be true when the embassy is attacked and hostages are taken. Embassy station chief Gunter Conner and marine captain Brooke Grant end up the unlikely survivors of this Benghazi-style attack. Suddenly they are the only hope for saving their captured colleagues.

The firestorm of drama is compelling, set off by the intersection of Washington power and politics, a fragile third-world Islamic country, and Somali Americans here at home.

Only Newt Gingrich's unique, in-depth knowledge of the political realities of friend and foe could weave such a spellbinding tale of events and personalities, one that could actually happen...if America's leaders aren't wary of a world full of duplicity.

Hard to put down

This book was harder to put down than a Michael Crichton novel. I thought at first that a political novel might be a little sleepy and boring but not this one. There was great action from the first chapter and stayed that way through the entire book. Also this isn't a book that tries to sell Republican ideas but seemed to focus on a more serious problem that our country is facing. This is a must read for every American regardless of your political stance.

A case of bad reader butchering a story.

The feeble reader destroyed the carefully structured characters. It was painful to listen to his failed attempts at vocalising different characters while missing the point.

Great current events story.

This is the first novel I've listened to or read by Newt Gingrich. His mastery of history, politics and current events shows through in the story. A well-written, entertaining novel.

Political (non-partisan) Terrorist Thriller

I enjoyed this book and the characters. I learned a lot about the decision making process that goes into dealing with the all too familiar threats in the world today. Some may shy away from a book written by a very partisan personality, but the book took great effort to remain a non partisan book. I didn't know much about the Somalian threat regarding terror, but since reading this book, I have heard it mentioned in the news several times. I guess that my main point in this book is that it is like a Tim Clancy novel except it has 400 pages instead of a thousand. Take that anyway you want to......

Surprisingly Good

I have to be honest, I wasn't expecting much from a book written by Newt Gingrich. I was pleasantly surprised. The authors did a masterful job portraying how backroom deals and compromises keep our government running. While not always pretty, these negotiations are a part of any government and have been around since courtiers jockeyed for positions in the court of kings. The story was also extremely timely given our recent election, although the book was written several years ago. My only true complaint focuses on the female lead. She came across as very immature. She took advantage of her relationship with the Head of the Joint Chiefs by disregarding orders, talking back to superiors and other actions that would have gotten most officers thrown in the brig. She also was disrespectful of other cultures, even when members of that culture were risking their lives to protect her. Yet she felt morally superior and took it upon herself to lecture her hosts in their own home. Pretty immature and classless. If she continues in future books, I hope she grows up and is less annoying. Otherwise, a very enjoyable read (listen.)

Great Job Mr. Speaker!

Newt’s book on terror and the subtleties of political power make for a fun, suspenseful read! One really feels like they are rubbing elbows with powerful politicians, who though they sometimes are not completely honest on face value, are honestly trying to keep America free. The good and patriotic politicians anyway.

I am going to read Treason, the sequel to Duplicity, now!

Meet US Marine Captain Brooke Grant!

Duplicity is a really good political/military suspense thriller. It is Book 1 in the three novel Brooke Grant series. Brooke's parents died in the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001 when she was in her mid-teens. She was then taken in by her dad's brother and his wife. Her uncle, who is very protective of her despite her objections, is US Army General Frank Grant who serves in the US government as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The novel occurs during a US presidential election with incumbent president Sally Allworth being challenged by the very wealthy governor of Florida. In a political decision President Allworth opens a US embassy in war torn Somalia. The decision has rather dire consequences for the US and especially for Captain Brooke Grant and the US diplomatic mission members, The antagonist of the entire series is an a Islamic militant leader known only as The Falcon.

Robert Fass narrates the first two novels in this series and Eric Martin narrates the third. Both a quite good, but Martin is better.
