Pellar is an orphan taken in by Masterharper Zist. Halla is one of the children of the Shunned. Though innocent of their parents' crimes, these children have inherited their cruel punishment. Lack of food, shelter, and clothes is their lot; hope is unknown to them. And what future would they hope for? Without a hold to call their own, there will be no protection for them when the lethal Thread inevitably falls again.

Life is particularly tough for Halla. Her family gone, she must fend for herself. Yet despite the brutality of her surroundings, Halla is kind and gentle, devoted to those more helpless than she.

As depraved as Halla is good, Tenim is in league with Tarik, a crooked miner from Camp Natalon, who helps him steal coal in exchange for a cut of the profit. But Tenim soon realizes there is a lot more to be made from firestone, the volatile mineral that enables the dragons of Pern to burn Thread out of the sky. Tenim doesn't care what he has to do, or whom he has to kill, in order to corner the market.

Cristov is Tarik's son. Dishonored by his father's treachery, the boy feels he must make amends, even if it means risking his life by mining the volatile firestone, which detonates on contact with the slightest drop of moisture.

When the last remaining firestone mine explodes in flames, a desperate race begins to find a new deposit of the deadly but essential mineral, for without it there can be no defense against Thread.

Liked how the story was wound around strong characters whilst solving some societal problems & explained how Firestone was rediscovered

Rich and heartfelt story telling!

The characters and lives on Pern are heartwarming and hopeful. I love all their stories.

A Safe extension

Having read many of the previous Pern stories, I feel that this one satisfactorily extends the franchise for those of us that want more. However, my mistake was to spend the last few months in 19th century literature, where character building was all the rage. Now, returning to Pern, I feel so disappointed to find that action trumps characters. Even dialog is a mere springboard for action.

Todd & Ann continue with back-story masterpieces! Another excellent addition to the Pern Universe. Treat youself, you won't be dissapointed.

How the shunned were treated

It seemed to me that the shun became slaves to D’gan’s weir and whether they lived or died, he didn’t care. Such a sad history for Pern. Glad in the end it was turned around and the shunned got a 2nd chance.

Great book

My only complaint is that he pronounces live the same no matter the context.

Dark thieves and leaders

Very disjointed and too dark for a good dragon rider series. Not sure where anything was going.

yes, the pern series is amazing.

What did you like best about this story?

The dragons. I've always loved this series for the amazing dynamic between the dragons and their riders, who doesn't dream of having a psychically linked mythological best friend on a non destroyed and polluted planet!

Todd is not as talented as his mother but he still does a good job. I try to keep him seperate in my mind from his mother, and not judge him too harshly. I'm sure his mother could never have completely shared the pern in her mind with anyone no matter how hard she tried. He does a fantastic job of keeping us fed with pern stories and I for one am so glad that he continued it as I was just not ready to let pern go!

First half of book repeat of dragon kin

I really like the story but the first half of the book is the story of dragon kin but from a different perspective the author could have Easley stared the story after the mining accident and you wouldn't have missed much
