Er selbst nannte den "Doktor Faustus" "ein Lebensbuch von fast sträflicher Schonungslosigkeit, eine sonderbare Art von übertragener Autobiographie, ein Werk, das mich mehr gekostet und tiefer an mir gezehrt hat, als jedes frühere". Gert Westphal ist der bedeutendste Interpret für das Werk von Thomas Mann. Er bringt die feine Ironie und die Prägnanz der Mann’schen Sprache vollendet zum Ausdruck.

Verwandte, Honoratioren und markante Persönlichkeiten seiner Jugend werden integriert. Es ist die Geschichte des langsamen Niedergangs einer reichen Kaufmannsfamilie über vier Generationen hinweg. Auch mehr als hundert Jahren nach seinem ersten Erscheinen hat der Roman nichts an Charme und Aktualität eingebüßt.

An excellent book, the reader was superb and made Mann’s long sentences easy to follow.
