Office Space rewritten by Disney

A fun book. An interesting take on religion, benign, not heavy or preachy. Definitely funny, and strangely atheist friendly. There is some extrapolations on humanitarianism, but it stays in the shallow end. A novel approach to the relationships and mythos of deities and their followers.

Divine Misfortune is one of those books that's easy to relate with. A good pick me up listen after your car breaks down, or your boss yells at you. Lucky struck me as kind of douchey Raoul Duke (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,) but perhaps that was intentional.

A fortunate stab in the dark

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to friends who like a little absurdity, or friends who like trashy science fiction movies.

What did you like best about this story?

This story paced itself just right. It kicked in the absurd early on, and then built on it slowly using loads of humour, cliche and "I saw that coming but still got a surprise" type moments to get to a obvious but still surprising climax.

Any additional comments?

I bought this book based on my previous purchased of his book "Automatic Detective". Initially I was a bit disappointed that this book had a less noir style, but soon I forgot about that and enjoyed this book for it's own merits. It's not good literature, but it's a good story and a fun listen.

Interesting idea poorly delivered

The story and topic seems pretty interesting and unique. But the narrator delivers the story with the same voice for all characters. That and his annoyingly loud breathing between every other word made it impossible for me to make it very far from the beginning.

Clever, inventive, humorous.

There were some outright funny situations and clever concepts. The author has a great imagination and a talent for painting pictures with words.

Gods Gone Wild

If you listen to the audio clip for Divine Misfortune, you will not only get a good sample of the nice narration work of Fred Berman, but you will be immediately clued in to the zany tone that carries through this whole book. A. Lee Martinez includes a whole pantheon of Norse, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and more gods in this farce and the story is presented strictly for comedy; no deep thoughts or religious commentary here. It won't bring new insights, but it will probably make you laugh out loud. The tone of the book reminded me of the Iron Druid fantasy series with gods behaving in ways that would make atheism very attractive. Great listen for some good laughs.

Good fantasy humor, like Discworld

What did you like best about Divine Misfortune? What did you like least?

I liked the mix of modern earth life and the casual acceptance of gods and their favor in everyday modern earth life. I disliked that there was no serious discussion of an afterlife in all of that.

If you’ve listened to books by A. Lee Martinez before, how does this one compare?

I haven't but I might look them up in the future.

What about Fred Berman’s performance did you like?

I thought Fred did a good job of narrating. Didn't make any mistakes that I heard and he did manage to make the characters mostly distinct from each other.

I love A. Lee Martinez, but I usually read his books. This is the second one I've listened too and the story and narration was very good. Funny as usual.

What does Fred Berman bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

All the character voices. Excellent job of accents and personalities!

A. Lee Martinez is great!

This book was cute and funny. The narrator did a great job with the different voices, and it was a fast, fun read. There were gods in this book that I'd never heard of.

entertainment - only 2% fat

I'd just come out of a heavy book and this was perfect. this book was entertaining. .. but the lite version. amusement, humour, action and silly in equal measure without the faintest sniff of depth. not as fast food as some books. neither was it gormet . but it had a good balance and kept me engaged and tuned in without being challenged.
