Acerca de esta escucha

You may be wondering why the idea of the discovery of ‘the true self’ has become such an important and popular topic throughout the last few decades. As our societies continue to evolve and modernize, are we losing touch with who and what we truly are? And if so, how can we reconcile our (technological) advancements as a species with the development of each individual’s unique self? Is there even a place reserved for an individual’s true self in such a world?

This book aims to find an answer to these questions by looking at the thoughts and theories of one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century, Carl Jung. For, as you will see, Jung became in many ways an expert when it comes to the discovery of the true self. Moreover, Jung’s theories formed the basis for all kinds of ideas and concepts related to self-discovery, ideas which continue to grow in popularity to this day. These include, for instance, ‘shadow work’ and ‘inner child healing’. Jung was even responsible for the re-introduction of Mandala drawings into Western culture; the mandala representing the idea of the self.

At the same time, Jung argued that the development of the true self is the only way in which we can solve the problems we are currently facing within our societies, as well as within ourselves.

Jung believed that what we usually consider to be the self (our ego), is only the tip of the iceberg. According to Jung, some of the most vital aspects of our true self would be missing if we only develop our conscious personality. Jung believed that some of our most important values can be found within our unconscious. Jung called the process of integrating the unconscious, individuation. If we succeed in the individuation process, we will come to understand who we truly are, because we will be able to form a bridge between our conscious and unconscious world.

Jung managed to create this bridge by writing his mysterious Red Book. It is the aim of this book to create an opportunity for you to create your own version of a Red Book. For this purpose various journalling exercises are provided throughout the book. Hopefully, after reading this book and completing the journalling exercises, you will have developed a better understanding of your true unique self.
