Als wir ihn zu Beginn dieser Geschichte kennenlernen, arbeitet der Amerikaner Henry Marston in einer Bank und lebt mit seinen beiden Kindern und seiner französischen Frau in Paris. Wir begleiten ihn bei seinen persönlichen Kämpfen und entscheidenden Momenten. Zu Hause in den USA könnte er mehr Geld verdienen, aber das ist ihn zunächst nicht besonders wichtig - bis es das dann doch wird. Ein unangenehmer Vorfall veranlasst ihn, mit seiner Familie in die USA zu ziehen, wo er wohlhabender wird; aber eine Wiederholung der gleichen Unannehmlichkeiten veranlasst ihn, ein zweites Mal etwas zu ändern. Marston hat Eheprobleme mit seiner französischen Ehefrau Choupette und er erleidet einen Zusammenbruch, nachdem er ihre Untreue entdeckt hat. Zwischen diesen beiden Ereignissen lernt er eine junge Frau kennen, die ihm das Schwimmen beibringt. Dies geschieht an einem französischen Strand, und die junge Frau ist ebenfalls Amerikanerin. Später wird Marston mit Herausforderungen konfrontiert, die mit der Scheidung, dem Sorgerecht für die Kinder und dem Liebhaber seiner Frau, Charles Wiese, zusammenhängen.
Die Schwimmer (The Swimmers) ist eine Kurzgeschichte von F. Scott Fitzgerald, die am 19. Oktober 1929 in der Saturday Evening Post erstmals veröffentlicht wurde. Sie gehört mit zu seinen beliebtesten Kurzgeschichten. Für dieses Hörbuch wurde der Originaltext der Erzählung aus dem Amerikanischen von Peter Eckhart Reichel neu übersetzt.
