Luke beginnt seine Reise zurück nach Manchester mit den neuesten "Rekruten" für die Städte. Er ist seltsam beeindruckt von dem "alten" Mann, Ragland, der, nachdem er bewiesen hat, dass er keine Bedrohung darstellt, fragt, ob er mit ihnen in den Süden reisen kann.
In der Zwischenzeit ist in Manchester eine Gruppe von Kindern nach einem Erkundungstag verschwunden. Isaac, Indigo und die anderen Eltern sind außer sich vor Sorge, und mit jeder Stunde, die vergeht, ist Isaac mehr davon überzeugt, dass sie sich nicht nur im Wald verirrt haben.
Die zerrissene und blutige Jacke seines Sohnes, die auf einer zertrampelten Lichtung gefunden wird, bestätigt seinen schlimmsten Verdacht. Den Zeichen auf der Lichtung zufolge wurden sie von einer großen, gut organisierten Gruppe entführt, die nur schlechte Absichten haben kann.
Isaac beeilt sich, einen Rettungstrupp zusammenzustellen, denn er weiß, dass die Zeit drängt, wenn sie die Entführer finden und die Kinder retten wollen.
Die Ereignisse überschlagen sich wie ein außer Kontrolle geratener Zug - werden Luke und sein neuer Freund rechtzeitig eintreffen, um die Kinder zu retten, oder müssen sie die blutigen Scherben aufsammeln...
