Edward wird im viktorianischen London als Sohn eines Earls geboren. Er erlebt eine unbeschwerte Kindheit und ist nie ernsthaft krank. Als das 20. Jahrhundert anbricht, wird ihm klar, dass er nicht ist wie andere Menschen: Er altert kaum. Mehr und mehr ist Edward gezwungen, sich von den Menschen, die er liebt, zurückzuziehen. Im ersten Weltkrieg wird er schwer verletzt und zieht durch seine schnelle Heilung die Aufmerksamkeit der Deutschen auf sich. Schließlich bleibt ihm nichts übrig, als alles zurückzulassen und in die neue Welt zu fliehen.
Victoria ist achtzehn Jahre alt, als sie beschließt, ihr Elternhaus zurück zu lassen und nach San Francisco zu gehen. Sie möchte unbedingt Teil der Hippie-Szene werden, doch schnell wird ihr klar, dass sie den Zenit jener Bewegung versäumt hat. Es ist 1968, und diejenigen, die übrig geblieben sind, haben sich radikalisiert und schließen sich mehr und mehr gewalttätigen Protesten an.
Während die Jahrzehnte vergehen, lebt Edward unerkannt in Boston, New Orleans und San Francisco. Dort gerät er Mitte der 60er Jahre in die aufziehende Hippie-Ära. Als er die junge Aussteigerin Victoria aus einer brenzligen Situation rettet, ahnt er nicht, dass dieses Zusammentreffen sein Leben radikal verändern wird...
