In der Ukraine strömt im Sommer das Volk auf den Sorotschinsker Jahrmarkt. So auch der verwitwete Bauer Solopij Tscherewik, der zusammen mit seiner Tochter Paraska und seiner zweiten Ehefrau Chiwrja anreist. Paraska verliebt sich in den jungen Grizko. Wer auf dem Jahrmarkt allerdings was verkaufen möchte, wird bitter enttäuscht, denn der Teufel macht allen Händlern einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Der Jahrmarkt scheint verwunschen und doch windet sich am Ende alles zum Guten. Eine spannende Geschichte über Liebe und Tod im Russland des 18. Jahrhunderts!
Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Gogol (1809-1852) war ein russischer Schriftsteller mit ukrainischer Herkunft. Er ist einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der russischsprachigen Literatur in der Ukraine. Nach ersten literarischen Versuchen kam er 1828 nach Sankt Petersburg, scheiterte jedoch daran, eine Anstellung an der Universität zu bekommen. Stattdessen reiste Gogol nach Deutschland, wo er erfolglos versuchte Schauspieler zu werden. Nach einer kurzen Zeit im Staatsdienst, arbeitete Gogol als Geschichtslehrer an einer Privatschule für Mädchen. Hier lernte er 1831 den Dichter Alexander Puschkin kennen, der ihm ein Freund und Förderer wurde. Er begann zu schreiben und feierte mit seinen volkstümlichen ukrainischen Erzählungen "Abende auf dem Weiler bei Dikanka" einen Überraschungserfolg. Zwischen 1836 und 1848 unternahm Gogol noch Reisen durch Deutschland, die Schweiz, Österreich, Frankreich und Italien, doch durchlief er eine schwere schöpferische Krise. Zudem begann er an einer paranoid-halluzinatorischen Psychose zu leiden, einer Form der Schizophrenie. Gogol starb an den Folgen strengen religiösen Fastens im Alter von 42 Jahren.
