1894 wurde Leonarda Cianciulli in eine von Missbrauch geprägte Familie hineingeboren. Als junges Mädchen unternahm sie zwei Selbstmordversuche, um sich von dem Elend zu befrei-en. Nach Jahren des Missbrauchs suchte Leonarda nach Stabilität und heiratete Raffaele Pansardi. Ihre Mutter war mit dieser Heirat nicht einverstanden und machte ihrem Ärger im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes Luft und verfluchte die Ehe. Leonarda glaubte an die Macht der Worte ihrer Mutter, die sie für den Rest ihres Lebens verfolgen sollten.
Infolge dieses Fluchs litt Leonarda unter hysterischen Krampfanfällen, wurde wegen Betrug inhaftiert, verlor ihr Haus durch ein Erdbeben, hatte drei Fehlgeburten und verlor zehn ihrer Kinder in den ersten Lebensjahren durch verschiedene Krankheiten. Ihre Ängste wurden noch verstärkt, als eine Wahrsagerin ihr sagte: „In einer Hand kann ich das Gefängnis se-hen. In der anderen ein Irrenhaus.“
1939 teilte Leonardas ältester Sohn Giuseppe ihr mit, dass er zur Armee gehen würde. Als eines von den vier Kindern, die ihr geblieben waren, musste sie ihn um jeden Preis schützen. Sie beschloss, dass die einzige Möglichkeit, dies zu erreichen, das extremste Mittel war – ein Menschenopfer.
Der Fluch ist ein erschütternder Bericht über einen der brutalsten und bizarrsten Kriminalfälle der Geschichte. Ryan Greens fesselnde Erzählung zieht den Leser in das wahre Grauen, das die Opfer erlebt haben, hinein und verfügt über alle Elemente eines klassischen Thrillers.
