D.O.D.O. - das Department of Diachronic Operations - ist eine Geheimorganisation der amerikanischen Regierung, die es sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, die Magie in unsere Welt zurückzuholen. Denn selbst wenn Zauberei heute nur noch Stoff für Märchen und Mythen sein mag, so war sie doch real, bis sie 1851, dem Jahr der Great Exhibition in London, für immer verschwand.
Melisandre Stokes, Linguistikerin in Harvard, und Tristan Lyons, ein geheimnisvoller Agent der amerikanischen Regierung, haben eine Mission: in die Vergangenheit zu reisen und den Niedergang der Magie zu verhindern. Wir wissen es spätestens seit Zurück in die Zukunft. Die Regel Nr. 1 bei Zeitreisen lautet: Bloß nicht die Vergangenheit verändern! Denn man kann nie wissen, wie sich das eigene Handeln auf die Zukunft auswirkt. Genau das hat sich D.O.D.O. - das Department of Diachronic Operations - allerdings vorgenommen. Die hochgeheime US-amerikanische Regierungsorganisation will nichts weniger als ... die Zauberei zurückbringen. Schließlich kam uns 1851, während der Londoner Weltausstellung, die Magie abhanden. Eine Erkenntnis, der mittlerweile zwar ins Reich der Märchen und Mythen verbannt wurde, aber nicht weniger wahr zu sein scheint. Als eine Harvard-Linguistin und ein Agent die Verbindung zwischen Magie, Wissenschaft und Zeitreisen entschlüsseln, scheint das D.O.D.O.-Ziel greifbar nah. Denn der erste große Schritt, der Sprung in die Vergangenheit, klappt verdächtig perfekt. Doch was erwartet das Team dort - und bei ihrer Rückkehr in die "neue" Zukunft?
