Ildhjertes største fjende, Tigerstjerne, tørster stadig efter at få hævn over sin gamle klan, Tordenklanen. Derfor har han overtaget Skyggeklanen, og uden de andre klaners vidende har han kontaktet Blodklanen, en klan af vilde baggårdskatte, for at få dem til at hjælpe ham med at blive anfører for alle skovens katte under det nye navn Tigerklanen.
Flodklanen vælger at slå sig sammen med Tigerstjerne, og snart begynder den nye Tigerklan at terrorisere alt og alle i skoven. Ildhjerte ved, at det eneste håb om at overvinde Tigerstjerne og hans blodtørstige hjælpere fra Blodklanen er, at alle skovens klaner står sammen, og at kattenes forfædre i Stjerneklanen kæmper sammen med dem. Men hvad nytter det, når Stjerneklanen ikke længere taler til ham?
Den mørkeste time er den spændende afslutning på serien om Krigerkattene, der begyndte med "Ud i vildnisset".
Serien på seks bøger om Krigerkattene følger fire klaner af vilde katte. I centrum for begivenhederne står tamkatten Røde, som bliver optaget i Tordenklanen og uddannet som kriger med navnet Ildhjerte.
Erin Hunter er et fælles pseudonym for forfatterne Victoria Holmes, Kate Cary, Cherith Baldry, Gillian Phillip, Inbali Iserles, Tui T. Sutherland og Rosie Best. Sammen har de skrevet flere ungdomsbøger i fantasygenren – blandt andet serien om Krigerkattene på seks bind.
