Vrijwel niemand komt levend uit de hel die Auschwitz heet. Mala, gevangene 19880, begrijpt dat op het moment dat ze de trein uit stapt. Als tolk voor de ss heeft ze een iets hogere status dan de andere gevangen, een positie die ze gebruikt om zo veel mogelijk levens te redden.
