Als marinier Logan Thibault tijdens een missie in Irak een foto vindt van een glimlachende jonge vrouw, stopt hij die in zijn zak om hem terug te kunnen geven aan de rechtmatige eigenaar. Maar zolang niemand zich meldt, houdt hij de foto bij zich. Na een tijdje begint het Logan op te vallen dat hij meer geluk heeft dan anders: hij wint het ene na het andere spelletje poker, en bij een hevig gevecht komen twee collega's om, maar blijft hij gespaard. Zou de foto werken als een soort geluksamulet?
Terug in Colorado kan Logan de foto - en de vrouw die erop staat - maar niet uit zijn hoofd zetten en hij besluit haar te gaan zoeken. Als hij haar vindt, wordt hij totaal overrompeld door de enorme aantrekkingskracht die hij voelt. Elizabeth, een kwetsbare maar sterke gescheiden moeder van een zoontje, is zonder twijfel de vrouw van zijn dromen. Ze krijgen een gepassioneerde, stormachtige relatie, maar Logan zwijgt over het bestaan van de foto. Die beslissing zal hij al snel betreuren, want als de waarheid aan het licht komt, zijn de gevolgen niet te overzien.
