Das Chaos in der Milchstraße, das seit dem Eintreffen des mysteriösen Sternenschwarms herrscht, scheint sich zu steigern. Gigantische Pilzraumschiffe säen Tod und Verderben auf den von ihnen heimgesuchten Welten, und nach wie vor gibt es keine starke Gegenwehr: Die meisten Intelligenzwesen der Galaxis sind verdummte Opfer einer Strahlungswelle, die der Schwarm ausgeschickt hat; nur wenige Immune ringen verzweifelt um das Überleben ihrer Planeten.
Auch Perry Rhodan und seine engsten Gefährten gehören zu diesen Immunen. Rhodan beruft eine galaktische Konferenz ein, die endlich die Wende im Kampf gegen den Schwarm einleiten soll. Doch auf dieser Konferenz tritt eine neue, bislang unbekannte Macht auf den Plan: das heimliche Imperium, dessen Abgesandte in einer Verbindung mit dem Schwarm zu stehen scheinen.
Kurz darauf dringt ein wagemutiges Geheimkommando in das kosmische Gebilde ein. Der Mausbiber Gucky und seine Begleiter wagen sich bis auf den "Planeten der gefangenen Seelen" - und dort treffen sie auf einen der Herrscher des Schwarms, auf einen sogenannten Götzen...
