Berlin, 1928. Im Herzen dieser vor Kreativität flirrenden Modemetropole ist das Warenhaus Lichtenstein ein Ort, an dem unterschiedlichste Menschen aufeinandertreffen:
Hedi, einst Ladenmädchen im Lichtenstein, ist inzwischen mit Hannes, dem Konfektionär des Hauses, verheiratet. Sie haben eine Tochter und teilen die Liebe zur Konfektionsmode - bis Hannes sich einer anderen Frau zuwendet.
Thea leitet die Schneiderkontrolle und ist glücklich mit ihrer Großfamilie und Ehemann Georg. Einzig ihr Geheimnis um Sohn Carl hütet sie vor ihm.
Schauspielerin Ella hat alles, was sie sich erträumt hat: beruflichen Erfolg und mit Galerist Gustav genau den Ehemann, der es versteht, ihr Leben zu teilen. Nur ihre Freundinnen Hedi und Thea wissen um den schönen Schein, den Gustav brutal zerstört.
Die Weltwirtschaftskrise wird für das Warenhaus zur Bedrohung. Ludwig Lichtenstein will einen Pakt mit den Nazis eingehen, um die Kassen wieder zu füllen. Sein Plan spaltet die Belegschaft und vertieft den schwelenden Konflikt mit seinem Bruder Jacob.
