Die Überreste der Armee des Herzogs de Clairmont wurden von feindlichen Legionen umzingelt. Sie stehen unter dem Kommando von Ricardo di Lorenzo, auch bekannt als der "Goldene Löwe". Der Marschall de Clairmont selbst ist schwer verwundet und dem Tode nahe.
Die Herzöge de Bauffremont und de Gondy haben ihre Kräfte an der Grenze zwischen Bergonia und Vestonia zusammengezogen. Jetzt steht die Armee bereit, unter der Führung von Prinz Philippe abzumarschieren, um die umzingelten vestonianischen Kameraden zu retten. Aber das wird nicht ausreichen, um den Goldenen Löwen im Feld zu schlagen. Die Soldaten werden Hilfe von einer anderen Armee brauchen. Und zwar von einer, die es entgegen aller Erwartungen geschafft hat, die Atalianer in drei verschiedenen Schlachten zu besiegen und die alte Imperiale Straße unter ihre Kontrolle zu bringen.
Max hat bereits geschafft, was er ausgezogen war zu erreichen: Sein Weg zur Markgrafschaft de Valier ist frei. Und er hat genügend Leute, Besitz von seinen neuen Ländereien zu ergreifen. Aber noch ist der Krieg in Bergonia nicht vorbei… Und Max hat zwar seine eigenen Angelegenheiten, um die er sich kümmern muss. Aber er weiß auch genau, wohin der Goldene Löwe sich wenden wird, sobald er die Armee von Prinz Philippe besiegt hat.
Das bedeutet, Max hat nur eine Möglichkeit - er muss dieser Bedrohung ein für alle Male ein Ende setzen...
