Historia
The most translated book in the world after the Bible, the Tao Te Ching, or “Book of the Tao,” is a guide to cultivating a life of peace, serenity, and compassion. Through aphorisms and parable, it leads readers toward the Tao, or the “Way”: harmony with the life force of the universe. Traditionally attributed to Lao-tzu, a Chinese philosopher thought to have been a contemporary of Confucius, it is the essential text of Taoism, one of the three major religions of ancient China.

One of the undisputed giants in the history of human thought, and the founder of one of the world's longest-lasting cultural traditions, Confucius (known as Kong Fuzi in his native China) is arguably the most enduring of all the world's great thinkers. The Analects, the slender volume thought to have been compiled by his followers, has the strongest claim to represent Confucius' actual words. The book contains memorable sayings about the moral health of the individual, the family and the body politic.

Taoist living rests on four pillars: the public, the domestic, the private, and the spirit lives. Not only do Taoists strive to live these four aspects fully and in a balanced way, they also believe there is an outlook and an art to each of them. Eva Wong uses the teachings of Taoist masters themselves to explain the essential concepts. She then gives voice to these texts - simplifying them, removing barriers to understanding, and making them completely accessible and relevant to the modern reader.

What does it mean to say that we live in a secular age? Almost everyone would agree that we - in the West, at least - largely do. And clearly the place of religion in our societies has changed profoundly in the last few centuries. In what will be a defining book for our time, Charles Taylor takes up the question of what these changes mean - of what, precisely, happens when a society in which it is virtually impossible not to believe in God becomes one in which faith, even for the staunchest believer, is only one human possibility among others.

Considered by many to be Hannah Arendt's greatest work, published as she neared the end of her life, The Life of the Mind investigates thought itself, as it exists in contemplative life. In a shift from her previous writings, most of which focus on the world outside the mind, this work was planned as three volumes that would explore the activities of the mind considered by Arendt to be fundamental. What emerged is a rich, challenging analysis of human mental activity, considered in terms of thinking, willing, and judging.

What does it mean to be truthful? What role does truth play in our lives? What do we lose if we reject truthfulness? No philosopher is better suited to answer these questions than Bernard Williams. Writing with his characteristic combinationof passion and elegant simplicity, he explores the value of truth and finds it to be both less and more than we might imagine.

Twenty-seven years ago, Matthieu Ricard gave up a promising career as a scientist to study Tibetan Buddhism - not as a detached observer but by immersing himself in its practice under the guidance of its greatest living masters. Years later, this project was born, and Richard met with his father, Jean-Francois Revel - a French philosopher who became world famous for his challenges to both Communism and Christianity. At an inn, these two profoundly thoughtful men explored questions that have occupied humankind throughout its history.

Historia
Hannah Arendt's insightful observations of the modern world, based on a profound knowledge of the past, constitute an impassioned contribution to political philosophy. In Between Past and Future, Arendt describes the perplexing crises modern society faces as a result of the loss of meaning of the traditional key words of politics: justice, reason, responsibility, virtue, and glory. Through a series of eight exercises, she shows how we can redistill the vital essence of these concepts and use them to regain a frame of reference for the future.

The Tao Te Ching is a Chinese classic text written around 400 BC and traditionally credited to the sage Laozi, though the text's authorship, date of composition and date of compilation are debated. The oldest excavated portion dates back to the late 4th century BC, but modern scholarship dates other parts of the text as having been written—or at least compiled—later than the earliest portions of the Zhuangzi.

Unless you are a sinologist
I am fluent in modern Chinese, but the narrator's pronouciation is so awful that I couldn't understand what he was saying without going back to the ancient original. This translation also suffers from too many commentaries, two hours introduction and 81 commentary made this book very unwieldly, the philosophical translation (or rather, philosophical commentaries) also render this edition arcane at best, but if you are a sinologist, I think this book will still be of interest to you.

It seems that 2400- 2600 years ago there was a lot of thinking going on. Socrates. Siddhartha, and Lao Tzu. and all of it so applicable today that it seems fresh. and matured.

thorough analysis and explanation, allow a reader used to western philosophy to approach the Dao De Jing in the right way, answer some questions and explained why others have to remain unanswered or rather, explain which one are the correct ones to ask

As a sinologist, I get it
As a sinologist, and a practicing Daoist, I get it. The explanations in the shift of worldview and thought processes necessary to understand the Dao De Jing are on point, and vitally needed in order to truly understand the Dao De Jing. If you want to read poetry, then read a poem. If you want to understand the universe, then read the Dao De Jing. However, I would recommend reading this book because this audio translation of the book is the worst ever. First, it sounds like a machine is reading. Where is the passion and humanity? Not here. Second, the pronunciations of the Chinese words are completely inaccurate. They are so mindboggling inaccurate that I cannot finish listening to this tape (or stream of 1s and 0s). I want to throw up every time I hear Robert Lowenstein pronounce a Chinese word, even a simple one. Pin yin (the romanization system that renders characters into words using a Western alphabet) is not that hard to master, and no one is even asking that he get the tones right, but please do us a favor and try to pronounce the Chinese words in a book about Chinese words relatively accurately, for the love of god!

Good, but needs better chapter breaks
This audio recording could really use some bookmarks. There are 81 chapters to the Dao De Jing, and it's very difficult to find the specific chapter you are looking for. The actual chapter splits seem to be random, and unconcerned about whether they split at an actual chapter, or even in the middle of the commentary. It would actually be much more useful, and less confusing, if there were a new chapter or a bookmark for each chapter from the book.

Chapters make it really hard to reference after
The actual chapters are really short even including the commentary. The structure of this recording makes it really hard to re-read any actual chapters to think about the lessons.
