Brilliant

Brilliantly written, a joy to listen to, as well as very enlightening and informational! I highly suggest.

This is worth it.

I highly recommend this audio book. It is full of food for thought. I mostly listen to Confessions when I lay down to sleep. Sometimes it takes me quite a while to fall asleep, but listening to this makes it enjoyable.

Excellent!

This is a beautiful translation, and is wonderfully read by the narrarator. I can't think of St. Augustine without thinking of this guys voice. He reads in a meditative way if that makes any sense, without going too fast or too slow. The sound quality is excellent!

Augustine the Rock Star

This translation and reading of Augustine is brilliant. Where this book is weak in its translation it makes up for in the narration of Richard Ferrone. Ferrone does a great job of reading this book with great authority and makes the heavy words of Augustine enjoyable.

Excellent material, disappointed by a technology issue

I enjoyed the book very much and found this weighty material more easily understood listening to modern English.

The only complaint I have is the chapters/books are jumbled together within the tracks. For example the second track, titled chapter two, begins with the end of book two, book three starts at 19 minutes, and at one hour book four is introduced and carries over into the third track, titled chapter three. The writing is so dense one wants to stop and digest and review what’s being said. Therefore, it would be better if there were tracks for each chapter in all twelve books.

Unbelievable after 1600 years, still fresh

Augustine's Confessions, especially in Chadwick's Translation and with Ferrone's soulful and penetrating narration, tells the story of the soul's journey back to God and the reflections, 25 years later, of God's gentle and merciful wooing of the lost and tattered self still bent on getting its own way.

Augustine reveals the universal longing for a life of wholeness and his prayers and piercing honesty draw my tired heart into self awareness on many late nights when I have gotten "lost among the many" - to quote one of the innumerable brilliant psychological sayings.

"Our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you"
"I was hiding behind myself and you turned me to face you"
"You are closer to us than we are to ourselves"

It's an indespensible part of my audio library and it opens my own heart to God when I am dry, angry, and needing a pathway back to my True Home.

Great translation, good reader make Augustine fun!

This has been a great listen all-around. The translation of this classic text is both faithful and accessible - far easier to understand than the old translations I read in school which seemed to try and match the tone of the KJV instead of providing the clarity found here. Because of this ease of access, I found myself thoroughly enthralled in the second, philosophical section of the text (the first section focusing primarily upon Augustine's autobiography). I now have a much greater respect for Augustine who seems less like the narrow-focused idol some have made him into and more like he would enjoy a modern physics course followed by a rousing coffee shop discussion on the merits of tinkering with a variety of interpretational perspectives to derive a greater understanding of both scripture and the world. The narrator does a fantastic job of adapting his voice to the needs of the text to help create this more lively and intimate view of the author. This is certainly an audiobook I would recommend to a varied audience as it doesn't have that rigid, stale formality that usually gets applied to this text.

Great Works

This is my third "read" of St Augustine's, " Confessions"." Hearing" his words gave me a deeper understanding of this work and I was completely engaged by the performance, St Augustine's written thoughts are as profound today as they were at the time of his writing. My first reading was when I was a senior in high school, as an "assignment", and although I had an interest in classic literature, my youth limited my understanding. My second read, coming later in life. was more profound. given my life's experiences to that point, and my desire to gain a broader and deeper appreciation of life. Now in my late 60's, my life's journey has brought renewed energy and curiosity, as I move toward a deeper and more profound understanding of these types of works, and my desire to strengthen my faith. I highly recommend St. Augustine's, "Confessions" to all.

Loving the audio version

Similar to another reviewer I’ve tried reading this several times and just couldn’t get into it. But I’ve been listening to this on my commute and it has been a completely different experience. The reader conveys emotions very well and has a soothing, easy to listen to voice. And St Augustine weaves a wonderful narrative while constantly reminding himself and us of all of God’s mercy and patience. I highly recommend this especially if you have wanted to read the text but had difficulty entering into it!

A Profound Confession From a Great Man of God

What made the experience of listening to Confessions the most enjoyable?

The narrator of this story has a great grasp of the tone and expression contained in St. Augustine's Confessions. He seamlessly renders this story with great emotion exactly as I imagine Augustine himself speaking it. To top off the experience, the narrator did not try to over-emphasize the "poetic rendering" style so often associated with these kinds of classics.

Most profound is that the confessions of Augustine are a truly beautiful piece of work from a man truly inspired of God.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Confessions?

The humility and immense transformation expressed in the mind and heart of Augustine as he relays his confessions.
