This volume of Combat Veterans' Stories of the Vietnam War contains stories told by 14 men that fought in the Vietnam War in branches of the US military and the Australian Army. The first begins in February 1962, with a US Air Force pilot that trained South Vietnamese flyers and flew covert air support for South Vietnam’s military. The final story is told by a US civilian, previously a non-combat US Army Armor officer, who worked, beginning in 1966, for the US Agency for International Development (USAID); the Chieu Hoi Program, in II Corps; CORDS; ICEX; and the Phoenix Program, and also held the equivalent rank of major general.
Other stories in this volume include those of a US Marine infantryman and a US Navy jet-fighter pilot who endured horrendous conditions as POWs. Volumes 1-4 of this series contain combat experiences told by 57 Vietnam War veterans. Volume 4 also contains information about the armed forces of nations allied with the US that fought against North Vietnam. Volume 5 contains 22 reports, including the US government’s explanation for the war, a review of the war and US armed forces in it, POW treatment, MIAs, the CIA and the drug trade, war crimes, PTSD, moral injury, and history lessons not learned.

1st Lieutenant Robin Bartlett suddenly found himself at the "repo-depo" in Bien Hoa reassigned to the 1st Cavalry Division. The unit had more helicopter support than any other unit in Vietnam. Immediate support from artillery, helicopter gunships, and ARA was only minutes away to support a firefight. Wounded troops could be medevaced even in dense jungle using "jungle penetrators." It also meant that Bartlett's platoon could deploy through helicopter combat assaults into hot LZs (landing zones) at a moment's notice if an enemy force had been spotted. And they did.

LRPs were all volunteers. They were in the spine-tingling, brain-twisting, nerve-wracking business of Long Range Patrolling. They varied in age from eighteen to thirty. These men operated in precision movements, like walking through a jungle quietly and being able to tell whether a man or an animal is moving through the brush without seeing the cause of movement. They could sit in an ambush for hours without moving a muscle except to ease the safety off the automatic weapon in their hand at the first sign of trouble. These men were good because they had to be to survive.

Once there, he volunteered for training and duty with F Company 58th Inf, the Long Range Patrol company that was "the Eyes of the Eagle." The Eyes of the Eagle is an accurate, exciting look at the recon soldier's war. There are none better.

The Worst Vietnam Book I’ve Ever Reas/ Heard
The stories are childlike in depth and detail and the narator reads like he’s a kindengarden teacher. Really Bad and I’ve been reading ever book I could find on the Vietnam War for 40 years.

By the title, I assumed this would be the stories of life in Vietnam and the missions they went on. Not so, gives the life story of some veterans before and after Vietnam.
