Acerca de esta escucha

Recruited by the US Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than 10,000 women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of codebreaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them. A strict vow of secrecy nearly erased their efforts from history; now, through dazzling research and interviews with surviving code girls, best-selling author Liza Mundy brings to life this riveting and vital story of American courage, service, and scientific accomplishment.

Reseñas de la Crítica

" Code Girls reveals a hidden army of female cryptographers, whose work played a crucial role in ending World War II.... Mundy has rescued a piece of forgotten history, and given these American heroes the recognition they deserve." (Nathalia Holt, best-selling author of Rise of the Rocket Girls)
"Similar to Nathalia Holt's The Rise of the Rocket Girls and Margot Lee Shetterly's Hidden Figures, this is indispensable and fascinating history. Highly recommended for all readers." ( Library Journal)

Great story

Among the histories of the contributions of “hidden women” the story of these code breakers deserves a major place. This account is detailed and personal.

An incredible story that deserves to be heard.

Thank you for writing and recording this book! Listening to it was an inspiring and captivating adventure and an amazing glimpse into the lives, passion, perseverance and absolute brilliance of some our nations most important and completely unsung heroes.

Everyone should read this book. It is at once historical, emotional, patriotic, eye opening, intellectually fascinating and beautifully touching. It takes you behind the walls of some of the most secret and clandestine chambers in history, on a true and amazing journey through some of the most defining moments of World War 2. This is not history told through the eyes of generals and politicians. This book, at long last, introduces a group of amazing women who passionately tackled and brilliantly solved some of the most difficult, important and world changing puzzles and challenges. The remarkable woman (and some equally remarkable men) whose stories are so dramatically and lovingly presented here, didn't just change the outcome of a war. They changed the world.

Their talent, tenacity, insights, dedication, bravery and pioneering spirit has had an everlasting impact on so many aspects of our modern world from the most obvious freedom, politics, warfare and foreign affairs to technology, communication, the work place, education and society at large. This audiobook, at long last, shares their inspiring voice, with great passion and care. This should be on every school's reading list and would rightfully be an inspiration to generations to come. That perhaps would be a fitting honor to the heroins of this story, who truly deserve the recognition, respect, honor and gratitude of the nation and the world.

Listening to this book has been a true pleasure. It so truly deserves to be read, heard and shared.

Fascinating account

March is Women's History Month so this year I decided to listen to Women's History. I'm so glad that this book has brought to light the stories of these Code Breakers. I'm always impressed with how much the people of this country helped with the war effort, and glad this story was told.

I'm a little hesitant to give all fives because I think the writing is more of a four, but the research and attention to detail allows me to overlook the fact that writing was lesser than the story. I didn't realize until I went to review that there was an accompanying PDF with photographs. That alone is worth an extra half star.

You don't need to wait until next Women's History Month to listen to or read this book. It is good any time of year. I think the narration is very good - there were so many facts and people and dates that it could be hard to keep people's interest.

Fascinating but a little too repetitive

I found the subject of code breaking fascinating and informative. The role of women, especially in this field, but also to some extent throughout the war effort is well covered and told in an interesting way. I liked the book and recommend it, but I think a good editor could have cut some of the repetition and perhaps organized it better--it does jump around in time and back and forth between the Army and the Navy.

Gripping, enlightening and compelling.

If you could sum up Code Girls in three words, what would they be?

I never realized!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Code Girls?

The realisation that the second world war created a monster in terms of the 'intelligence' services monitoring of global citizens. What started out as a war necessity turned into an information addiction.

Which character – as performed by Erin Bennett – was your favorite?

None

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Government is not your friend!
