If stranded on a log, with death facing us soon...how would we emotionally react?
Would we put aside petty differences, or neurotically go down in a churlish way?!
This short story themes itself on class differences, and what would really distract us from status-lust, presupposing anything ever could.
Odious insects serve as metaphors for catty society and status-longing, and also status-regret.
Intelligence insecurity serves as a theme, related to lacking status in society.
What do we do when confronted with someone of higher intelligence and higher status in society? How do we handle our own neurotic insecurities...if it's possible?
The lusting for further fame and admiration often blinds us myopically to the things that may be ephemerally more important.
This short story is about class juxtaposition, in a proverbial nutshell.
