We enter the ninth inning, the team is behind by two runs, and things are looking grim for the win unless by some miracle the infamous Casey can get up to bat and possibly save the day. The fans are cheering, the crowd is on alert, and hope abounds as the mighty Casey takes his position at the plate.
Written by Ernest Thayer and first published in the San Francisco Examiner on June 3, 1888, "Casey at the Bat", narrated by Kathy Poelker, presents the roar of the crowd, the calls of the umpire, and the total thrill of the game!

In it Malamud, usually appreciated for his unerring portrayals of postwar Jewish life, took on very different material - the story of a superbly gifted "natural" at play in the fields of the old daylight baseball era - and invested it with the hardscrabble poetry, at once grand and altogether believable, that runs through all his best work.
